5、lvation. It has two parts. The first part deals with Christians pilgrimage to the Celestial City, through which he realized his own salvation. The second part deals with his wife and childrens salvation through their pilgrimage. 9Analysis 1: The Pilgrims Progressa man clothed with rags standing in a

6、 certain place, with his face from his own house, a book in his hand, and a great burden upon his back. I looked, and saw him open the book, and read therein; and as he read, he wept and trembled; and, not being able longer to contain, he brake out with a lamentable cry, saying, What shall I do? 一個人

In the story Bunyan gives us not only a symbolic picture of London at the time of the Restoration but also a comprehensive satirical picture of the English society and the legal procedure in England in Bunyans day. 15 4.Symbolism

15、? 21 The Revolution Period was one of confusion in literature. English literature of the period witnessed a conflict between the two antagonistic camps. We can see that it is different from the literature of Elizabethan Period in the following three aspects:1) Elizabethan literature had a marked uni

16、ty and the feeling of patriotism and devotion to the Queen, but in the Revolution Period, all this was changed, the king became the open enemy of the people, and the country was divided by the struggle for political and religious liberty. So literature was as divided in spirit as were the struggling parties. 222) Elizabethan literature was generally inspiring. It throbbed with youth and hope and vitality. Literature in the Puritan Age expressed age and sadness. Even its brightest hours were followed by gloom and pessimism. 3
