Asian Americans are Americans of Asian descents. They comprise the third largest minority group in the United States. 22Asian AmericansTh
13、e largest ethnic subgroups are Chinese (3.53 million), Filipinos (3.05 million), Indians (2.77 million), Vietnamese (1.64 million), Koreans (1.56 million), and Japanese (1.22 million). Other sizable groups are Cambodian/Khmer (244,000), Pakistanis (214,000), Laotians (198,000), Bangladeshi (150,000)
14、, and Thais (150,000).23Asian AmericansAs we have mentioned earlier, Asian Americans were virtually banned from the United States for 40 years by immigration laws. 1924-1965People began to arrive in America in greater numbers after 1965. Asian Americans are a better-educated group, more likely to be
15、 in high-paying occupations and have higher family incomes than the general population.24Discrimination for Asian AmericansThe United States views Asian Americans as a Model Minority. People think they have high family incomes, better education, good occupational status and that they are hardworking
16、, intelligent, and successful. The government may ignore the needs of the poorer and less successful Asian Americans.
