OceanographicCommission(IOC).UNESCOwillensurethattheoceans’roleisclearlyacknowledgedatRio+20,inviewofitsmanifoldeffectsonsocialjustice,preservationoftheenvironmentandeconomicefficiency.TheRio+20Conferenceisamajorturningpointindefining“thefuturethatwewant”,andtheoceansmustbeincludedintheblueprintforthenewdevelopmentmodel.Today,WorldOceansDay,Icallonallpolicy-makers,industrialistsandcivil-societystakeholderstobemobilizedtoachievethisgoal.Ourcommonfuturedependsonit.MessagefromMsIrinaDirector-GeneralofontheoccasionoftheWorldEnvironmentDayGreenEconomy:doesitincludeyou?Weknowthefuturewewantforall.WewantafuturewhereeverygirlandboyWewantafuturewherewecanliveinahealthysetting,withstrongbondstonatureandarichdiversityofsocialrelations.Forthis,weneedaflourishingWeneedtocreategreenThisisourmessageforthe2012WorldEnvironmentDay.ThisistheflagwewillraiseattheUnitedNationsConferenceonSustainableDevelopmentinRio.Rio+20mustredrawthemapofdevelopmentandsetnewdirectionsforsustainability--buildingonnewformsofagriculture,newsourcesandusesofenergy,newwaysofbuildingandtransportation.Reachingthesegoalsrequiresnewapproachestofreshwaterandtheocean,tolandsandtheclimate.Itcallsfornewthinkingaboutthemeaningofprogress.Itdemandsnewsourcesofinnovationandresiliencethathavedeeperrootsthanmaterialoreconomicassets.WemustconstructgreeneconomiesonthefoundationsofgreenTheagendaissteep.Educationforsustainabledevelopmentmustfostervaluesandbehavioursforanewcultureofsustainability.Science,technologyandengineeringmustbemobilizedtofindinnovativeanswerstocomplexCulturemustbeintegratedintoalldevelopmentinitiatives.Themediamusthelpbuildawarenessandinformpolicy.Wemustpromotesocialinclusionthroughintegratedpolicies.Sustainabilitywillonlycomefromworkingonalloftheselevels.UNESCOisactingateachofInscience,technology,innovationandengineering,UNESCOisencouraginggreensolutionstothechallengesoftodayandtomorrow.TheOrganizationisleadingtheUnitedNationsDecadeofEducationforSustainableDevelopment(2005-2014)toprovideeveryonewiththetoolsandskillstomakeadifference.Weareworkingtostrengthentheinterfacebetweenscienceandpolicy,andactivelybackingtherecentlyestablishedInterernmentalScience-PolicyPlatformonBiodiversityandEcosystemsServices(IPBES).Greeneconomiesmustincludeeveryone.Nosociet
