Forthisstudy,researchersaskedanumberof60studentstoperformvarioustaskswhilebeingscannedbythermalcameras.Oneofthesetasksinvolvedmakinga3-to-4-minutecalltotheirparents,partnersorfriendsandtellinganimportantlie.Participantshadtomakeuptheliethemselvesduringthecall,andthethermalcameraspickedupthis“oppositePinocchioeffect”causedbythechangesintemperatureinthenoseandforehead.

Interestingly,thethermalliedetectorpickedupthetemperaturedifferencein80percentoftestparticipants,whichisabetterrateofsuccessthanthatofanymodernliedetectorusedbythepolice.“Withthismethodwehaveincreasedaccuracyandreducethechancesof‘falsepositives’,somethingthatisfrequentwithothermethods,”saidDr.GómezMilán,whoaddedthatpolicecouldonedaycombineotherliedetectiontechnologywiththeirtechnologytoachievebetterresults.
