as1870whentheirnumbershadalreadybecomesmaller,aflockbelievedtobe1mile

wideand320miles(about515kilometers)longwasseennearCincinnati.

Sadly,theabundanceofpassengerpigeonsmayhavebeentheirundoing.Wherethe

birdswereabundant,peoplebelievedtherewasanever-lastingsupplyandkilledthemby

thethousands.Commercialhuntersattractedthemtosmallclearingswithgrain,waited

untilpigeonshadsettledtofeed,thenthrewlargenetsoverthem,takinghundredsatatime.

Thebirdswereshippedtolargecitiesandsoldinrestaurants.

Bytheclosingdecadesofthe19thcentury,thehardwoodforestswherepassenger

pigeonsnestedhadbeendamagedbyAmericans'needfbrwood,whichscattered(3區(qū)散)

theflocksandforcedthebirdstogofarthernorth,wherecoldtemperaturesandspring

stormscontributedtotheirdecline.Soonthegreatflocksweregone,nevertobeseenagain.

In1897,thestateofMichiganpassedalawprohibitingthekillingofpassenger

pigeons,butbythen,nosizableflockshadbeenseeninthestatefbr10years.Thelast

confirmedwildpigeonintheUnitedStateswasshotbyaboyinPikeCounty,Ohio,in
