Wealsoknowthatsincetheindustrialrevolutionbegan,mankind'sactionshavecontributedsignificantlytothatgreenhouseeffect.AtmosphericconcentrationsofGHGshaverisenfromaround280ppmtwocenturiesagotoaround370ppmtoday,thankschieflytomankind'suseoffossilfuelsand,toalesserdegree,todeforestationandotherland-usechanges.Bothsurfacetemperaturesandsealevelshavebeenrisingforsometime.
Therearegoodreasonstothinktemperatureswillcontinuerising.TheIPCChasestimatedalikelyrangeforthatincreaseof1.4℃-5.8℃overthenextcentury,althoughthelowerendofthatrangeismorelikely.Sincewhatmattersisnotjusttheabsolutetemperaturelevelbuttherateofchangeaswell,itmakessensetotrytoslowdowntheincrease.
