Asdeepastheelephant'sdeathdisturbsthereader,theauthordoesnotopenlyconveytothereaderthathefeelshehadmadeamistake.Infact,theessayendsalmosttooabruptlyforthereadertoconcludetheauthor'sdeeperfeelings.However,thedescriptionoftheelephant'spainfuldeathissuretorendersomeamountofsympathytowardthecreature,andcreatefeelingsofdisgusttowardtheauthor.Theelephantinthestoryisthesymbolofimperialism.Theysharemanysimilaritiesjustmentionedabovetheparagraph.ShootinganelephantvirtuallyistoendimperialismonthewilloftheBurmese.Thewritershowedhisrageagainsttheevil(empire)-spiritedbeast(elephant)impliedinhiswritings.Symbolism:
