Beginninginthelate1980s,theUSDrugEnforcementAgency(DEA)hasexpandeditseffortsinothercountriesincludingMexicoandmostrecentlyAfghanistan,wherealargequantityoftheworld'sheroinisproduced.Althoughithassparkedavarietyofanti-drugeducationprograms,thewarondrugshasbeencriticizedasineffective.

BackgroundInformationLesson35TheDEA'sactivitiesinColumbia,Panama,andotherneighboringcountrieshasfocusedoncapturingandprosecutingleadersoftheMedellincartel,whichisresponsibleforthemajorityofcocaineproductionandtransportintheregion.TheDEAhasalsoattemptedtogainsupportforitseffortsbysigningtreatiesandprovidingmilitaryassistanceforpoliticalleadersofthesecountrieswhoagreedtohelp.Whilethesecampaignshaveledtothecaptureandprosecutionofsomeprominentcartelleaders,theyhavenotcompletelystoppeddrugsfromenteringtheUnitedStates.Overtime,someofthecocaineproductionhasmovedtoMexicoandthedrugisincreasinglytransportedacrossthatborderintotheUS.BackgroundInformationLesson35
