centuriesago,GenghisKhan*stroopsrodedownfromMongolia,mercilesslykillingthe

mountaintribesmenofAfghanistanwhodaredtoresisttheinvader;butapartfromthis

humiliatingperiodintime,theAfghanistans----whoareinfactamixtureofthreeseparate

ethnicgroups-…h(huán)aveheldtheirheadshighinthefaceofinvasion.

Thecountrythatisnowatthecenteroftheworld'sattentionwasonceoneoftheworld's

proudestnations,andanationthatothercountriesinvadedattheirownrisk.Inthe19th

centurythearmiesoftheBritishEmpireknewthatAfghanistanwasnotacountrytointerfere

with.

Ahundredandtwentyyearsago,in1881,Britishsoldierswerenonethelessstationedinthe

Afghancapital,Kabul.Theyweretherefortworeasons,firstlytohelpstoptheRussiansfrom

invadingthecountry,andsecondlytoensuretheexistenceofanindependentbuffer-state

betweentheRussianEmpiretothenorth,andtheBritishEmpireinIndia(modernPakistan)

tothesoutheast.

QueenVictoriawouldhavelikedtoaddAfghanistantoherempire,buthersoldiersnever

succeededinthismission,thoughtheytried,andfailed.In1879,thewholeBritishMission

(embassy)inKabul,includingservants,wasmassacredbyagroupofrebelAfghansoldiers,

furiousbecausetheyhadnotbeenpaidbytheirownking,MohammedYacoub.Yacoubwas

friendlytotheBritish,sotheBritishgottheblame.ThestoryoftheKabulMassacrewas

rememberedforalongtimebytheBritishinIndia,andrecordedbyseveralVictorianwriters

andpoets.

OtherbloodyeventsalsomarkedtherelationshipbetweentheBritishandtheAfghansin

the19thcentury.In1842,inthenotoriousbattleoftheKhyberPass,acompleteBritisharmy

wasmassacredbyAfghansastheyreturnedfromashortraidintothecountry.Justoneman,

adoctor,managedtosurvivethemassacre,andmakehiswaybacktothesafetyofIndia,to

tellthestoryoftheterribleevent.

ThoughtheworldhaschangedalotsinceVictoriantimes,Afghanistanhaschangedlittle.In

manyways,theTalibanhaveevenmovedthecountrybackintime,adarkageofignorance,

intoleranceandrepression;butevenwithouttheTaliban,Afghanistanwouldstill,today,be

oneoftheworld'smostundevelopednations.Land-locked,asidefrommostmodernroutesof

communication,andbrokenupbythemightyHinduKushmountainsandbyvastdeserts,

Afghanistan,liketheutribalterritory"ofnorthwestPakistan,hasremainedfiercely

independentfromoutsideinterference,andstronglyattachedtoitstraditionalways.

Forthelasttwenty-fiveyears,theAfghanpeoplehavesufferedfromwaranddestruction:

theoverthrowofthemonarchy,thentheinvasionbytheSovietUnionin1978,thenthewar

againsttheSoviets,thenthestruggleforcontrolofthecountrybetweentheTalibanandthe

supportersofGeneralMassoud,nowthemassivedepartureofapeopleonthevergeof

starvation,drivenfromtheirhomesasmuchbyfearoftheTalibanasbythethreatofmilitary

invasion.

Yetinspiteofallthis,despitethedestructionofalargepartoftheircountry,theAfghan

peopleremainkindandhospitable.OlderAfghansrememberbacktoapast,whentheylived

inpeaceandrelativesecurity;youngerAfghans,whohaveneverknownaneraofpeace,look

forwardtothedaywhenanewageofpeacewillcome.Hopefully,thatnewdawnwillnotbe
