Thissummer,ItookpartintheNuffieldBursaryschemeforamonth,workinginateam,atAerogisticsLtd.Ourprojectwastoanalyseandimplementanewsystemforthedistributionofconsumablematerialstotheindividualdepartmentswithinthecompany.Wefoundthecurrentsystemtobehighlyinefficientandaftermuchdatagatheringandthought,presentedourfindingstotheseniormanagersofthecompanywhoagreedwithourideas.Thelastweekwasspentstartingtheimplementationoftheseideas.Ifoundtheexperiencetobehighlychallenging,yetrewardingespeciallyasitledtomegainingaGoldCrestAward.IalsofounditusefulasIgottoseeengineersatworkandthedailyproblemsthattheyface.Ilearntthatthereisalotmoretobeingagoodengineerthanpossessingtechnicalcompetence,althoughthisisundoubtedlyimportant;teamwork,communicationandleadershipskillsarevitalaswell.

Ihavealsorecentlybeenselectedtocompletetwoplacementswitharmyengineers.Oneoftheseplacementswillfocusonthemorepracticalsideofengineeringwhiletheotherwillfocusontheskillsneededbyaprofessionalengineerfocussingonprojectplanningandleadership.Ihopetofindtheexperienceuseful.

InmysparetimeIliketoplaysportandmusic.InsecondaryschoolIwascaptainfortheNetballandFootballteams,aswellastakingpartinvariousothersports.Theexperienceofthisgreatlyimprovedmyteamworkingabilitiesaswellasmyfitness.AsakeenmusicianIamworkingtowardsmygrade5theoryandgrade7practicaloncello.IamamemberofaYouthOrchestra,andhavejustrecentlycompletedatourofItaly.Iamalsointheschoolorchestraandhaveledseveralorchestrasinthepast,beforeprogressingtotheLYO.

Inschool,IamDeputyHeadGirl,helpingtoleadateamofover40prefects.Ifindthistobeachallengingandstimulatingroleandbelieveithasdevelopedmyconfidenceimmensely.Aswellascarryingoutthenormaldutiesofaprefect,suchassupervisingyoungerstudents,Imustleadandmanagetheotherprefects.Myroleinvolvesarrangingrotas,organisingafterschooleventssuchastheYear7socialandparent'seveningsandpublicspeakingaswellasotherresponsibilities,whichhavedevelopedmycommunication,organisationandleadershipskillsimmensely.Therolerequiresalotofcommitment,butithashelpedtoimprovemytimemanagement,asItrytostrikeabalancebetweenitandschoolwork,whichismymainpriority.IhavealsobeenselectedtocompeteinthePhysicsOlympiadandhavebeenenteredfortheBiologyAdvancedExtension.

During200,Iimmersedmyselfinthoroughpreparationsforbusinessschool,learningtowritebusinessplans,modelbusinessesandcarryoutstatisticaltests.Throughmyself-directedstudyandexperienceintheManagementposition,I’mthoroughlyfamiliarwiththeconceptsbehindstrategy,marketing.
