The22studentswhomadetheStellaVitaaremembersofSolarTeamEindhoven—agroupthat

believesthatthefutureofsustainabletransportissolar-powered.

SolarTeamEindhovendescribestheStellaVitaasa"self-sustaininghouseonwheels”.Themobile

homemakesitsownpowerfordriving,butalsofortakingshowers,watchingtelevision,making

coffee,chargingcomputersandphones,etc.

WhentheStellaVitaisn'tbeingdriven,itsroofcanberaisedtogivepeopleinsidemorespace,

whilemoresolarpanelscanalsobepulledout.Thisdoublesthesizeofthesolarpanelsto17.5

squaremeters.Withalargersizeofsolarpanels,itonlytakesabouttwoorthreedaystocharge

themobilehometolOO%.

InsidetheStellaVitaisaseatingareawithatableandasmallkitchenspace.Themobilehome

alsohasadoublebed,atoiletandashower.

LastSeptember,SolarTeamEindhovenstarteda3,000-kilometertripthroughEuropewiththe

StellaVita.Someproblemswiththemobilehomemeantthatforsomepartsofthetripitneeded

tobemovedonatrailer.However,theteamfixedtheproblemsandwasabletodriveitforlarge

partsofthetrip.

TheLibraryLetsYouBorrowPeople,NotBooks

Weallhaveastorytotell,andperhapsifwesharedourstoriesmore,wemightunderstandeach

otherbetter—evenbreakdownsocialprejudice.

ThisistheideabehindtheHumanLibrary.TheHumanLibrarywascreatedbyDanishreporter

RonniAbergelintheyear2000togetherwithhisbrotherDanyandworkmatesAsmaMounaand

ChristofferErichsen.

RonniAbergelfirstcameupwiththeidea.Hethought—whynotorganizeeventswhereyoucan

borrowpeopleinsteadofbooks?"\thinkitcouldworkbecausethelibraryisoneofthefew

placesinourcommunitywhereeveryoneiswelcome,whetheryou'rerichorpoor,homelessor

livinginabighouse/hesaid.

IntheHumanLibraryevents,human“books"talkabouttheirlifestories.Mosthuman“books”

arepeoplewhohaveexperienceddifferentkindsofprejudiceanddiscrimination.Itcouldbe

becauseoftheirskincolor,beliefsoradisability—orbecauseoftheirlifechoices.Intheevents,

“readers“canlearnaboutwaysinwhichthey'redifferentfromeachother.Afterlearningabout

thestories,“readers“maybebravetochallengetheirownprejudiceandthenbecomemore

inclusive.

Oneofthemostactive“books"is81-year-oldYokawhogrewupinaJewishfamilyinthe

Netherlands.Luckily,shedidn/tgetcaughtbytheNaziswhenshewasyoung.Asoneofthefew

survivorsleft,Yokabelievesshecanhelppeopleunderstandwhathappenswhendiscrimination

goesunchallenged.

Altogether;thereareover1,000human"books”,eachwithavaluablestory.

Themostimportantthingisnottojudgethehuman“books“bytheircovers—buttofirsttakea

lookinside.

RepairingAncientBooks

AttheNationalLibraryofChina(NLC)inBeijing,somerepairersareshakingoffcenturiesofold

dusttorepairtheancientbooks.

XieJincheng,oneoftherepairers,hasbeendoingthisforabout10years.However;hecanonly

repairafewpagesaday,anditsometimestakeshimseveraldaystofixjustonepage.Ittakes

quitealongtimetosearchfortherightpapertorepairthebooks.""Sometimesit'simpossibleto

getsimilarpaper;soweneedtoprocessthepaperourselves/Xiesaid.

DuWeishengisanotherrepairerattheNLC.Ancientbookrepairingisalifelongjobforhim.Du,

69,hasworkedasanancientbookrepairersince1974.Heishappytoseeyoungpeoplejoining

histeamandchoosingtostay."Theyhavegoodeducationalbackgrounds,andbringamore

scientificwaytothebookrepairing/Dusaid.In2013,atrainingcenterwassetupattheNLCto

trainmoreprofessionalrepairers.

TheNLCisnowhometosomeofChina'sbest-knownliterarytreasures.Ithousesmorethan3

millionancientChinesebooks.It'sthebiggestcollectionofitskind.

Scienceandtechnologyalsohelpswiththeprotectionoftheancienttreasures.In2016,a

national-leveldatabaseofancientChinesebookswentonlineforpublicuse.Nearly21,000copies

ofsuchbooksattheNLCareincludedinthedatabase.Readerscanreadthemonlineatanytime

withoutcausinganyclangertothem.

ThankstotherepairersandotherworkersattheNLC,thepublicnolongerhavedifficultyfinding

theseancientbooksandtheycanknowmoreaboutthefantasticancientChineseculture.

AMobileHome

ElleLunaisadesigner,painter;andwriter.Sheusedtoworkasafantasticdesigneronapps,such

asUber.However;shequitherjobinher30sandstartedthe100-DayProject.

ItwasMichaelBierutwhofirstusedthe100-DayProjectattheYaleSchoolofArt:eachstudent

chosesomethingtodoeverydayfor100days.Forexample,onestudentmadeaposterinunder

aminuteeverydayfor100days;anotherdancedeverydayandmadeavideo.

In2014,Lunaandhergroupstartedthe100-DayProjectonline.Everyonecantakepartinit.It's

simple——chooseacreativeproject,doiteverydayfor100days,andshareyourprocessonline.
