TheCommonCoreStateStandardsInitiativeisasignificantandhistoricopportunityforstatestocollectivelydevelopandadoptacoresetofacademicstandardsinmathematicsandEnglishlanguageartsWhyisthisimportant?Currently,everystatehasitsownsetofacademicstandards,meaningpubliceducationstudentsineachstatearelearningtodifferentlevelsThisinitiativewillallowequalaccesstoanexcellenteducationAllstudentsmustbepreparedtocompetewithnotonlytheirAmericanpeersinthenextstate,butwithstudentsfromaroundtheworld48states,DC,PuertoRicoandtheVirginIslandshavesignedontotheCommonCoreStateStandardsInitiativeledbytheNGACenterandCCSSOThisinitiativewillpotentiallyaffect43.5millionstudentswhichisabout87%ofthestudentpopulation
(Source:SchoolDataD;2007)Whyisacommoncoreofstatestandardsgoodforstudents?ItwillhelppreparestudentswiththeknowledgeandskillstheyneedtosucceedincollegeandcareersExpectationswillbeconsistentforallkidsandnotdependentonastudent’szipcodeItwillhelpstudentswithtransitionsbetweenstatesClearerstandardswillhelpstudentsunderstandwhatisexpectedofthemandallowformoreself-directedlearningbystudentsWhyisacommoncoreofstatestandardsgoodforparents?HelpsparentsunderstandexactlywhatstudentsneedtoknowandbeabletodoHelpsparentssupporttheirchildrenandeducatorsbymakingexpectationsclearandgoalshighProvidesequalaccesstoahighqualityeducationProvidesopportunitiestomeaningfullyengageparentsWhyisacommoncoreofstatestandardsgoodforeducators?Allowsformorefocusedpre-serviceandprofessionaldevelopmentAssuresthatwhatistaughtisalignedwithassessmentsincludingformative,summative,andbenchmarkingProvidestheopportunityforinstructorstotailorcurriculumandteachingmethodsInformsthedevelopmentofacurriculumthatpromotesdeepunderstandingforallchildrenWhyisacommoncoreofstatestandardsgoodforstatesanddistricts?AllowsstatestoaligncurriculatointernationallybenchmarkedstandardsAllowsstatesanddistrictstoensureprofessionaldevelopmentforeducatorsisbasedonbestpracticesCreatestheopportunityforAmericatocompeteforhigh-wage,high-skilljobsinaknowledge-basedeconomyAllowsforthedevelopmentofacommonassessmentProvidestheopportunitytocompareandevaluatepoliciesthataffectstudentachievementacrossstatesanddistrictsCreatespotentialeconomiesofscalearoundareassuchascurriculumdevelopmentandassessmentWhatwillthecommoncorestandardslooklike?Fewer,clearer,andhigherAlignedwithcollegeandworkexpectationsIncluderigorouscontentandapplicationofknowledgethroughhigh-orderskillsBuilduponstrengthsandlessonsofcurrentstatestandardsInternationallybenchmarked,sothatallstudentsarepreparedtosucceedinourglobaleconomyandsocietyEvidenceand/orresearchbasedWhatisbeingproducedandwhen?September2009:publicreleaseofdraftcollegeandcareerreadinessstandardsFebruary2010:publicreleaseofdraftstandardsforgradesK-12Early2010:releaseoffinalcollegeandcareerandK-12standards

looklike?AnAdvisoryGroupprovidesadviceandguidanceontheinitiativeAStandardsDevelopmentGroupisdefiningandwritingthecommoncorestatestandardsAnExpertFeedbackGroupinformstheworkoftheDevelopmentGroupandprovidesinputandguidanceasdraftsofthestandardsaredevelopedStatesandmanyorganizations,includingAFT,NEA,theAllianceforExcellentEducation,theBusinessRoundtable,theCoalitionforStudentAchievement,theHuntInstitute,NationalAssociationofStateBoardsofEducation,CouncilofGreatCitySchools,NationalCouncilofTeachersofEnglish,NationalCouncilofTeachersofMathareprovidinginputContinued:Whatdoestheprocesslooklike?ANationalForumonCommonStandardssharesideas,gathersinput,andinformstheinitiativeAdditionalinputsoughtthroughpubliccommentAValidationCommitteeensuresthestandardsareresearchandevidence-based;thisgroupisindependentoftheStandardsDevelopmentGroupWhathappensafterthecommoncorestandardsaredeveloped?AdoptionofthecommoncorestatestandardsisvoluntaryforstatesEachstatewillfollowitsindividualprocessforcoalition-buildingandadoptionStateswillbeaskedtosharetheirtimelinesforadoptionofthecommoncoreAdoptionofthecommoncorestatemeansthecommoncorewillrepresentatleast85%ofthestate’sstandardsinmathematicsandEnglishlanguageartsThereisanobviousroleforassessment;somestateswillvoluntarilycometogethertodevelopnew,innovative,commonassessmentsOn-goingandregularrevisionsandadjustmentswillbenecessaryWhathappensafterstatesadoptcommoncorestandards?Thecommoncorestatestandardsarethefirststepintransformingoureducationsystem.Forsystemicchangetooccur:Educatorsmustbegivenresources,tools,andtimetoadjustclassroompractice.Instructionalmaterialsneedtobedevelopedthataligntothestandards.Assessmentswillbedevelopedtomeasurestudentprogress.Federal,state,anddistrictpolicieswillneedtobere-examined
