RobertMoses(1888—1981)wasaNewYorkstateandmunicipalofficialwhoseambitiouspublicworksprojectsofthe1930s,1940sand1950stransformedtheurbanlandscapeofNewYorkCity.HeexpandedtheState’sparksystemandbuiltnumerousparkwaysandhundredsofnewplaygroundsandparksandimportanthighways,bridgesandtunnelslinkingtheboroughsofNewYorkCity.

MosespreferredrecreationalfacilitiestotheruralscenerystressedbytheEnglishRomanticists,andanorderedandsymmetricaldesigninFrenchRenaissancestyle,evidentinthesouthernCentralPark.Therefore,underMoses,CentralParkgained19playgrounds,12ball-fields,handballcourts,andtheskatingrink.CentralParkLocationonManhattanMap

TherearethreeelementsinthearchitectureofCentralPark.EnglishRomanticismischaracterizedbythepicturesqueidealtoblendwiththenaturalenvironment.CentralPark’sfoundingcommissionersOlmstedandCalvertVauxwereinfluencedbythistradition.TheiridealwastoallowNewYorkerstoexperienceadayinthepastoralcountrywithoutleavingtheislandcity.AnotherstyleisClassicismcharacterizedbyformalsymmetryandtheuseofstraightlines,evidentinthesouthendofthePark.

TheParkwaspressedforprimarilybywealthymerchantsandlandowners.Inthefirstdecadeafteritscompletion,itwasclearlytheplaygroundofthewealthy.Itwaslocatedtoofaruptowntobewithinwalkingdistanceforthecity’sworkingclasspopulation.CentralParkHistoryUntilthelate19thcentury,workerscomprisedbutafractionofthevisitorstotheParkwhentheylaunchedasuccessfulcampaigntohaveconcertsheldonSundays.Saturdayafternoonconcertswereformiddle-classaudiences,forthesix-dayworkingweekprecluded(deprived)attendancebytheworkingclass.CentralParkHistoryIndeedtheconceptofcreatingtheparkwasoriginallyconceivedbywealthyNewYorkerswhoadmiredthepublicgroundsofLondonandParis.However,withthematuringofthenationandtheriseofitspower,theprideofAmericanismgraduallytooktheupperhand.TheauthorthereforedescribestheParkproudlyasefficient,purposefulanddistinctive—neitherromanticnorclassical,andneitherEnglishnorFrench,butdistinctivelyAmerican.CentralParkHistory
