Withtherapiddevelopmentofinformationtechnologyandglobalization,cultivatingstudents'coreliteracyhasbecomeanurgenttaskineducation.InEnglishreadingteaching,itisessentialtofocusondevelopingstudents'coreliteracy.Thisarticleaimstoprovideabriefdiscussionontheimportance,challenges,andstrategiesofpromotingcoreliteracyinjuniorhighschoolEnglishreadingteaching.

Coreliteracyreferstotheskillsandabilitiesthatindividualsneedtoadapttothecomplexandrapidlychangingsociety.Itincludescriticalthinking,creativity,collaboration,communication,andculturalunderstanding.Readingisafundamentalskillthatprovidesafoundationfordevelopingcoreliteracy.Throughreading,studentsnotonlyacquirelanguageknowledgebutalsodeveloptheabilitytoanalyze,synthesize,evaluate,andapplyinformation.

Firstly,promotingcoreliteracyinEnglishreadingteachingisimportantbecauseithelpsstudentsbecomeindependentandlifelonglearners.Readingisnotonlyaboutdecodingwords;itisaboutcomprehendingandinterpretingmeaning.Byencouragingstudentstoanalyzeandevaluatetextscritically,theycanbecomemoreindependentintheirlearningprocess.Theywillbeabletoexploredifferentperspectives,formtheirownopinions,andmakeinformeddecisions.

However,therearechallengesinpromotingcoreliteracyinjuniorhighschoolEnglishreadingteaching.First,thetraditionalexamination-orientedteachingmodelplacesmoreemphasisonrotememorizationandneglectsthedevelopmentofcriticalthinkingskills.Teachersmayfeelpressuredtoprioritizeteachingcontentattheexpenseofcriticalandcreativethinkingskills.Second,somestudentsmaylackmotivationandinterestinreading.Theymayfindreadingdifficultandperceiveitasaboringandtime-consumingtask.Lastly,teachersmaystruggletofindsuitablereadingmaterialsandresourcesthatstimulatestudents'interestandcatertotheirdiverselearningneeds.
