Sincethelate1900s,Americanshavebeguntofullybelieveintheir“fastfoodculture”.In1994

alone,fastfoodrestaurantsintheUnitedStatessoldover5billionhamburgers,makingita

favoritemealandanimportantcommodity.Eachdayin1996,sevenpercentofthepopulationate

atthe11,400McDonald’s;malesfromtheirmid-teenstotheirearly30smadeup75percentof

thisbusiness.Bythen,fastfoodhadbecomeaculturalphenomenonthatreachedbeyond

America’sborders.In1996McDonald’sownedover7,000restaurantsinothercountries,

including:1,482inJapan;430inFrance;63inChina;andsoon.McDonald’shasalsorecognized

someculturaldifferences.InGermany,forexample,theoutletssellbeer,inFrancetheysellwine

andbeer,andinSaudiArabiatheyhaveseparatesectionsformenandwomenandclosefourtimes

adayforprayers.Butforthemostpartthefastfoodfareisthesame,maintainingthesameculture

onaninternationallevel.

EatinghabitsinAmericareallygetalotofcriticism.Butthetruthis,itmattersmuchwherein

shownbywhatfoodstheychoosetobuyinsupermarkets,andwhatrestaurantstheyeatin.There

isnowabigpushfor“green”foodsthataregrownnaturally.IncitieslikeNewYorkandChicago,

restaurantsoffernewandhealthystylestostayaheadofthecompetition.However,thesehabits

contrastwiththoseinAmerica’sheartland.Here,peopletendtoeatmoretraditionalandhigherfat

foods,suchasbreakfastsofeggs,bacon,sausages,toastandothergreasy,butdeliciousfoods.Fast

foodchainrestaurantssuchasMcDonald’sandtheOliveGarden,whichservecheaperfood,draw

alotofcustomersandarepopularinmostplaces.

TherearedifferenteatinghabitsacrossAmerica.Inbigcities,peoplehavenowbecomemore

health-consciousthanever.Thereisabigpushfor“green”foodsthataregrownnaturally.InNew

Yorkandotherbigcities,restaurantsoffernewandhealthystylestostayaheadofthecompetition.

However,peopleinAmerica’sheartlandarequitedifferent.Theyofteneatmoretraditionaland
