lPark.Forthetwoweeksthatthegateswereup,theparkwasfilledwiththousandsofpeople.BothNewYorkersandvisitorsfromoutoftownwantedtoseethistransformationofthepark.Justtokeepgoingthroughthegates,peoplewalkedtocornersoftheparkwheretheyhadneverbeenbefore.ObservedfromoneofNewYorkCity'sskyscrapers,thegateslookedlikeariverofbrightcolorflowingthroughthepark.TheycreatedafeelingofjoyfulcelebrationandbroughtNewYorkerstogether.TheinspirationforTheGates,astheinstallationwasinformallycalled,camefromtheinitial1854designforCentralPark.Theoriginaldesignershadplannedforgatesalongthepark'ssurroundingwalls,butthosegateswereneverbuilt.ChristoandJeanne-ClaudefocusedonthefactthatNewYorkerslovewalking,andthatCentralParkisoneoftheirfavoriteplacesforwalkingandformeeting.Thegatestructuresweredesignedtomirrorthegridofthecitystreetsnearthepark.Tallandnarrow,theyseemedtoinvitepeopletowalkthroughthem.Thefabricwaschosencarefullyandcutinsuchawaythatitcouldswingfreelyinthewindandseemtofollowthecurvingpathsonwhichthegateswerebuilt.ChristoandJeanne-ClaudefirstproposedtheideaforTheGatestwenty-sixyearsearlier,butNewYorkofficialsatthattimedidnotwelcometheproject.Inthecourseoftryingtogetpermissionfromthecityofficesinchargeofthepark,theartistsreceivedavastcollectionofdocuments.Nomatterhowlongandfrustratingitwas,gettingpermissionwaspartoftheprocessofcreatingTheGates.ChristoandJeanne-Clauderecognizethattheirartwork,inthiscase,wasnotmadeaboutCentralPark;itwasmadeoutofCentralPark.Inspiteofallthedelaysandobjections,theartistspersisted.TheyreceivedbuildingpermitsforTheGatesin2003,byorderofMayorMichaelBloomberg.Severalmoreyearswererequiredforthedesignandtheconstructionofthe7,500structureswiththeirpiecesoforangefabric.Andfinally,onFebruary13,2005,TheGateswereopen.Choosethestatementthatbestexpressestheoverallthesisofthepassage.ChristoandJeanne-ClaudebuildworksofartinAmericanparksChristoandJeanne-Claudebelievethatartshouldbeseriousand
