greatsolutions.Inthe1950s,theEgyptiangovernmentwantedtobuildanewdamacrosstheNileinordertocontrolfloods,produceelectricity,andsupplywatertomorefarmersinthearea.Buttheproposalledtoprotests.WaterfromthedamwouldlikelydamageanumberoftemplesanddestroyculturalrelicsthatwereanimportantpartofEgypt’sculturalheritage.Afterlisteningtothescientistswhohadstudiedtheproblem,andcitizenswholivednearthedam,thegovernmentturnedtotheUnitedNationsforhelp

in1960.Theprojectbroughttogethergovernmentsand

environmentalistsfromaroundtheworld.Templesandotherculturalsites

weretakendownpiecebypiece,andthenmovedandputbacktogetheragaininaplacewheretheyweresafefromthewater.In1961,Germanengineersmovedthefirsttemple.Overthenext20years,

thousandsofengineersandworkersrescued22templesandcountlessculturalrelics.

Fiftycountries

donated

nearly$80milliontotheproject.
