JeannetteWing,CarnegieMellonUniversityABSTRACTMyvisionforthe21stCentury:Computationalthinkingwillbeafundamentalskillusedbyeveryoneintheworld.Justasreading,writing,andarithmeticarefundamentalskillseverychildlearns,computationalthinkingisaskillneededforeverycitizentofunctionintoday’sglobalsociety.Computationalthinkingisanapproachtosolvingproblems,buildingsystems,andunderstandinghumanbehaviorthatdrawsonthepowerandlimitsofcomputing.Computationalthinkingistheuseofabstractiontotacklecomplexityandtheuseofautomationtotacklescale.Thecombinationoftheautomationofabstractionunderliestheenormouscapabilityandreachofcomputing.InthistalkIwillarguethatcomputationalthinkinghasalreadybeguntoinfluencemanydisciplines,fromthesciencestothehumanities,butthatthebestisyettocome.Lookingtothefuture,wecananticipateevenmoreprofoundimpactofcomputationalthinkingonscience,technology,andsociety:onthewaysnewdiscoverieswillbemade,innovationwilloccur,andcultureswillevolve.Teachingcomputationalthinkingalsoraisesnewchallengesforeducation,especiallyinearlygrades.Whilewehavemodelsforteachingchildrenmathematicsandphysics,wedonotyethavesuchmodelsforteachingcomputationalthinking.Moreover,wehavetheuniqueopportunitytomakemosteffectiveuseofthecomputerasatooltoenhancethelearningofcomputationalthinking.Inthistalk,Iwillgiveexamplesofcomputationalthinking,includingonesfromourdailylives.Itisexcitingtoimaginethedaywhencomputationalthinkingwillbecommonplace.ComputationalThinking:
