Thefirstsurpriseonenteringtheschoolwasthatwehadtomovefromroomtoroom

accordingtothetimetableofthelessons.Forexample,ifthefirstperiodonMondaymorning

wasmathematics,wehadtogotoMr.Sharma'sclassroomonthegroundfloorofthemainblock.

Butifthenextlessonwerephysicsthenwewouldallhavetotroopuptothesciencelaboratories

onthethirdfloorofthenewwing.Thisconstantmovingfromroomtoroombetweenlessonsby

alltheboysintheschoolmeantwehadplentyofopportunitiestoplayaroundwithour

classmatesinthecorridorsandfindexcusestobelateforthenextperiod.

Nearlyallourteachersweremenandwecalledthem“Sir”.Themasterswouldcallusby

ourfamilynames.Apartfromthevarioussubjectteacherswealsohadaformteacherswho

lookedafterourclass.TheformteacherIlikedbestwaswhenIwasinform3:CrispinPickles.

HewasanEnglishteacherandlookedlikea19thcenturyromanticpoetwithlong,wildhair,tiny

roundglassesanduntidy,colorfulclothes.HewasfondofquotingShelleyandKeatstous

duringthemorningrollcallandhisideaofpunishingboyswhohadbeennaughtywastoget

themtocopyoutpassagesfromShakespeare.

LookingbackIrealizethatmanyoftheteachersatmyschoolwereodd.TherewasMr.
