OfcoursemyGrammarschoolwasaboys-onlyschool.Therewasanall-girlsschoolnext
doorbutIwasnotinterestedinthat,atleastnotuntilIenteredthefifthformattheageof16.
Thefirstsurpriseonenteringtheschoolwasthatwehadtomovefromroomtoroom
accordingtothetimetableofthelessons.Forexample,ifthefirstperiodonMondaymorning
wasmathematics,wehadtogotoMr.Sharma'sclassroomonthegroundfloorofthemainblock.
Butifthenextlessonwerephysicsthenwewouldallhavetotroopuptothesciencelaboratories
onthethirdfloorofthenewwing.Thisconstantmovingfromroomtoroombetweenlessonsby
alltheboysintheschoolmeantwehadplentyofopportunitiestoplayaroundwithour
classmatesinthecorridorsandfindexcusestobelateforthenextperiod.
Nearlyallourteachersweremenandwecalledthem“Sir”.Themasterswouldcallusby
ourfamilynames.Apartfromthevarioussubjectteacherswealsohadaformteacherswho
lookedafterourclass.TheformteacherIlikedbestwaswhenIwasinform3:CrispinPickles.
HewasanEnglishteacherandlookedlikea19thcenturyromanticpoetwithlong,wildhair,tiny
roundglassesanduntidy,colorfulclothes.HewasfondofquotingShelleyandKeatstous
duringthemorningrollcallandhisideaofpunishingboyswhohadbeennaughtywastoget
themtocopyoutpassagesfromShakespeare.
LookingbackIrealizethatmanyoftheteachersatmyschoolwereodd.TherewasMr.
Badman,whowashugelyfat,completelybald,taughtusmedievalhistory,andwouldthrowthe
blackboarddusteratanyboywhofailedtorememberimportantdatesinournation'shistory.Or
Mr.Sparks,themasterofreligiouseducation,whotriedtoteachusthebasicsofChristianitybut
whoseconstantdribblingandspittingmeantthatanyboyinthefirstthreerowsofchairswasin

IquicklyfoundIwasgoodatsomesubjectsandhadtoworkhardatothers.Ihadno
difficultywithlanguages,eithermodernorancient(ItookbothLatinandGreek)andenjoyed
historyandgeography.ButIstruggledwiththesciencesandIhadnotimeatallforartormusic.
Sport,however,countedformorethananyothersubjectatmyschool.
Myschoolwasfamousforsport.Ithadaverygoodrugbyteam,andalsodidwellatcricket.
Butitwasbestknownforrowing.BeinganoldschoolontheriverThamesitwasexpectedto
producestrongrowingcrews.Iwaspartofan“eight”foracoupleofyearsinformsfourand
fivebutIfoundtheearlymorningtrainingontheriveronfreezingwintermorningsnofunatall,
andquietlygaveupthesportwiththeexcusethatIhadtoprepareformy“O"levels(asthe
