30Perhapsbecauseofthepatienceinvolvedinthissortofextraction,womenseemedtodominatetheranksofthebreak-downers(duringmytenuretheratiowasfourtoone).AlthoughGaryknewI'ddoneabitofwriting,Iwasrelegatedtothefrontofficeandneverreceivedaninvitationtotrymyhandatbreakdowns.Itwasn'tsomethingIreallywantedtodo.Foronething,thewriterswereayouthfulbunch.Thebackroomseniorwasinherearlythirties,butnoneoftheothershadhittwenty-five.AndIthinkGaryrightlysurmisedI'dbetooopenlycynicalforthejobortrytoembellishtoomuch.Breakdownswereproducedanonymouslyandofferednoartisticevaluationsofthescripts.Thewritersmighttalkamongthemselvesaboutapiecetheyfeltwasparticularlygoodorbad,but

32BreakdownServicesunquestionablydominatedthefield,butthefielditselfhadimmutableperimeters.Breakdown'ssubscribershadtobeaccreditedagents,thoughthereweresomeexceptionstothisrule.Forinstance,specializedmediaorganizations,suchasthecompetitive,vulture-likecompaniesthatinsuredmovieproductions,couldkeeptabsontheindustrybysubscribingtotheweeklyBreakdownsummaries.ButthewholeBreakdownoperationwashardtomonitor.WhenIwasthere,aBreakdownsubscriptionwasexpensive,somethinglike$500ayear.Andthoughbreakdownswerecopyrightedandunauthorizedreproductionwasclearlyprohibited,xeroxmachinesarenotoriouslybadatpickingupsuchdistinctionsandamongthelargeragenciesbreakdownswereundoubtedlyduplicatedandpassedaround.
