TheartofcalligraphyiswidelypracticedandreveredintheEastAsiancivilizationsthatuseChinesecharacters.TheseincludeChina,Japan,Korea,andformerlyVietnam[1].Inadditiontobeinganartforminitsownright,calligraphyhasalsoinfluencedinkandwashpainting,whichisaccomplishedusingsimilartoolsandtechniques.TheEastAsiantraditionofcalligraphyoriginatedanddevelopedfromChina,specificallytheinkandbrushwritingofChinesecharacters.ThereisageneralstandardizationofthevariousstylesofcalligraphyintheEastAsiantradition.CalligraphyhasalsoledtothedevelopmentofmanyotherformsofartinEastAsia,includingsealcarving,ornatepaperweights,andinkstones.

Tools

Thepaper,ink,brush,andinkstoneareessentialimplementsofEastAsiancalligraphy:theyareknowntogetherastheFourTreasuresoftheStudy(T:文房四寶/S:文房四寶)inChina,andastheFourFriendsoftheStudy(HG:/HJ:文房四友)inKorea.Inadditiontothesefourtools,deskpadsandpaperweightsarealsousedbycalligraphers.

Paper

SpecialtypesofpaperareusedinEastAsiancalligraphy.

InChina,Xuanzhi,traditionallymadeinAnhuiprovince,isthepreferredtypeofpaper.ItismadefromtheTartarwingceltis(Pteroceltistartarianovii),aswellasothermaterialsincludingrice,thepapermulberry(Broussonetiapapyrifera),bamboo,hemp,etc.

InJapan,Washiismadefromthekozo(papermulberry),ganpi(Wikstroemiasikokiana),andmitsumata(Edgeworthiapapyrifera),aswellasothermaterialslikebamboo,hemp,rice,andwheat.somtimesthebrushisusedtoputinkonapen

Theinkismadefromlampblack(soot)andbinders,andcomesinstickswhichmustberubbedwithwateronaninkstoneuntiltherightconsistencyisachieved.Muchcheaper,pre-mixedbottledinksarenowavailable,buttheseareusedprimarilyforpracticeasstickinksareconsideredhigherqualityandchemicalinksaremorepronetobleedingovertime,makingthemlesssuitableforuseinhangingscrolls.Learningtorubtheinkisanessentialpartofcalligraphystudy.Traditionally,EastAsiancalligraphyiswrittenonlyinblackink,butmoderncalligrapherssometimesuseothercolours.Calligraphyteachersuseabrightorangeinkwithwhichtheywritepracticecharactersforstudentsandcorrectstudentswork.

Brush

ThebrushisthetraditionalwritingimplementinEastAsiancalligraphy.Thebodyofthebrushcanbemadefromeitherbamboo,orrarermaterialslikeredsandalwood,glass,ivory,silver,andgold.Theheadofthebrushcanbemadefromthehair(orfeather)ofawidevarietyofanimals,includingthewolf,rabbit,deer,chicken,duck,goat,pig,tiger,etc.ThereisalsoatraditioninbothChinaandJapanofmakingabrushusingthehairofanewborn,asaonce-in-a-lifetimesouvenirforthechild.ThispracticeisassociatedwiththelegendofanancientChinesescholarwhoscoredfirstintheImperialexaminationsbyusingsuchapersonalizedbrush.

Today,calligraphymayalsobedoneusingapen,butpencalligraphydoesnotenjoythesameprestigeastraditionalbrushcalligraphy.

Inkstone

Astoneorceramicinkstoneisusedtorubthesolidinkstickintoliquidinkandtocontaintheinkonceitisliquid.Cheaperinkstonesaremadeofplastic.

Inkstonesareoftencarved,sotheyarecollectibleworksofartontheirown.

Paperweight

Paperweightscomeinseveraltypes:someareoblongwoodenblockscarvedwithcalligraphicorpictorialdesigns;othersareessentiallysmallsculpturesofpeopleoranimals.Likeinkstones,paperweightsarecollectibleworksofartontheirownright.

Deskpad

Thedeskpad(ChineseT:畫氈,S:畫氈,Pinyin:huagrave;zhān;Japanese:下敷shitajiki)isapadmadeoffelt.Someareprintedwithgridsonbothsides,sothatwhenitisplacedunderthetranslucentpaper,itcanbeusedasaguidetoensurecorrectplacementandsizeofcharacters.Theseprintedpadsareusedonlybystudents.Bothdeskpadsandtheprintedgridscomeinavarietyofsizes.

Seal

Worksofcalligraphyareusuallycompletedbytheartistputtinghisorhersealattheveryend,inredink.Thesealservesthefunctionofasignature.

Study

TheChinesemethodofholdingthebrushHowthebrushishelddependsonwhichcalligraphicgenreispracticed.ForChinesecalligraphy,themethodofholdingthebrushismorespecial;thebrushisheldverticallystraightgrippedbetweenthethumbandmiddlefinger.Theindexfingerlightlytouchestheupperpartoftheshaftofthebrush(stabilizingit)whiletheringandlittlefingerstuckunderthebottomoftheshaft.Thepalmishollowandyoushouldbeabletoholdanegginthere.Thismethod,althoughdifficulttoholdcorrectlyforthebeginner,allowsgreaterfreedomofmovement,controlandexecutionofstrokes.ForJapanesecalligraphy,thebrushisheldintherighthandbetweenthethumbandtheindexfinger,verymuchlikeaWesternpen.

Apaperweightisplacedatthetopofallbutthelargestpagestopreventslipping;forsmallerpiecesthelefthandisalsoplacedatthebottomofthepageforsupport.

InChina,therearemanypeoplewhopracticecalligraphyinpublicplacessuchasparksandsidewalks,usingwaterastheirinkandthegroundastheirpaper.Verylargebrushesarerequired.Althoughsuchcalligraphicworksaretemporary(asthewaterwilleventuallydry),theyservethedualpurposeofbothbeinganinformalpublicdisplayofoneswork,andanopportunitytofurtherpracticeonescalligraphy.

InJapan,smallerpiecesofJapanesecalligraphyaretraditionallywrittenseatedinthetraditionalJapaneseway(seiza),onthekneeswiththebuttocksrestingontheheels.Inmoderntimes,however,practitionersfrequentlypracticecalligraphyseatedonachairatatable.Largerpiecesmaybewrittenwhilestanding;inthiscasethepaperisusuallyplaceddirectlyonthefloor,butsomecalligraphersuseaneasel.
