Suchstoriessetusthinking,wonderingwhatweshoulddoundersimilar

circumstances.Whatevents,whatexperiences,whatassociationsshouldwe

crowdintothoselasthoursasmortalbeings,whatregrets?

SometimesIhavethoughtitwouldbeanexcellentruletoliveeachdayasifwe

shoulddietomorrow.Suchanattitudewouldemphasizesharplythevaluesoflife.

Weshouldliveeachdaywithgentleness,vigorandakeennessofappreciation

whichareoftenlostwhentimestretchesbeforeusintheconstantpanoramaof

moredaysandmonthsandyearstocome.Therearethose,ofcourse,whowould

adopttheEpicureanmottoof"Eat,drink,andbemerry”.Butmostpeople

wouldbechastenedbythecertaintyofimpendingdeath.

Instoriesthedoomedheroisusuallysavedatthelastminutebysomestrokeof

fortune,butalmostalwayshissenseofvaluesischanged.Hebecomesmore

appreciativeofthemeaningoflifeanditspermanentspiritualvalues.Ithas

oftenbeennotedthatthosewholive,orhavelived,intheshadowofdeathbring

amellowsweetnesstoeverythingtheydo.

Mostofus,however,takelifeforgranted.Weknowthatonedaywemustdie,

butusuallywepicturethatdayasfarinthefuture.Whenweareinbuoyant

health,deathisallbutunimaginable.Weseldomthinkofit.Thedaysstretchout

inanendlessvista.Sowegoaboutourpettytasks,hardlyawareofourlistless

attitudetowardlife.

Thesamelethargy,Iamafraid,characterizestheuseofallourfacultiesand

senses.Onlythedeafappreciatehearing,onlytheblindrealizethemanifold

blessingsthatlieinsight.Particularlydoesthisobservationapplytothosewho

havelostsightandhearinginadultlife.Butthosewhohaveneversuffered

impairmentofsightorhearingseldommakethefullestuseoftheseblessed

faculties.Theireyesandearstakeinallsightsandsoundshazily,without

concentrationandwithlittleappreciation.Itisthesameoldstoryofnotbeing

gratefulforwhatwehaveuntilweloseit,ofnotbeingconsciousofhealthuntil

weareill.

Ihaveoftenthoughtitwouldbeablessingifeachhumanbeingwerestricken

blindanddeafforafewdaysatsometimeduringhisearlyadultlife.Darkness

wouldmakehimmoreappreciativeofsight;silencewouldteachhimthejoysof

sound.

Agoodbookisoftenthebesturnofalifeenshriningthebestthatlifecouldthink

out;fortheworldofaman'slifeis,forthemostpart,buttheworldofhis

thoughts.Thusthebestbooksaretreasuriesofgoodwords,thegoldenthoughts,

which,rememberedandcherished,becomeourconstantcompanionsand

comforters.

Bookspossessanessenceofimmortality.Theyarebyfarthemostlasting

productsofhumaneffort.Templesandstatuesdecay,butbookssurvive.Timeis

ofnoaccountwithgreatthoughts,whichareasfreshtodayaswhentheyfirst

passedthroughtheirauthor'sminds,agesago.Whatwasthensaidandthought

stillspeakstousasvividlyaseverfromtheprintedpage.Theonlyeffectoftime

havebeentosiftoutthebadproducts;fornothinginliteraturecanlongsurvive

ebutwhatisreallygood.

Booksintroduceusintothebestsociety;theybringusintothepresenceofthe

greatestmindsthathaveeverlived.Wehearwhattheysaidanddid;weseethe

Laborvanquishesall-notinconstant,spasmodic,orill-directedlabor;but

Thereisastrongviewthatholdsthatsuccessisamyth,andambitionthereforea

sham.Doesthismeanthatsuccessdoesnotreallyexist?Thatachievementisat

bottomempty?Thattheeffortsofmenandwomenareofnosignificance

alongsidetheforceofmovementsandeventsnownotallsuccess,obviously,is

worthesteeming,norallambitionworthcultivating.Whichareandwhichare

notissomethingonesoonenoughlearnsonone'sown.Buteventhemostcynical

secretlyadmitthatsuccessexists;thatachievementcountsforagreatdeal;and

thatthetruemythisthattheactionsofmenandwomenareuseless.Tobelieve

otherwiseistotakeonapointofviewthatislikelytobederanging.Itis,inits

implications,toremoveallmotivesforcompetence,interestinattainment,and

regardforposterity.

Wedonotchoosetobeborn.Wedonotchooseourparents.Wedonotchoose

ourhistoricalepoch,thecountryofourbirth,ortheimmediatecircumstancesof

ourupbringing.Wedonot,mostofus,choosetodie;nordowechoosethetime

orconditionsofourdeath.Butwithinallthisrealmofchoicelessness,wedo

choosehowweshalllive:courageouslyorincowardice,honorablyor

dishonorably,withpurposeorindrift.Wedecidewhatisimportantandwhatis

trivialinlife.Wedecidethatwhatmakesussignificantiseitherwhatwedoor

whatwerefusetodo.Butnomatterhowindifferenttheuniversemaybetoour

Threepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegovernedmylife:the

heavens.Butalwaysitbroughtmebacktoearth.Echoesofcriesofpain

reverberateinmyheart.Childreninfamine,victimstorturedbyoppressors,

helplessoldpeopleahatedburdentotheirsons,andthewholeworldof

loneliness,poverty,andpainmakeamockeryofwhathumanlifeshouldbe.I

longtoalleviatetheevil,butIcannot,andItoosuffer.

Thishasbeenmylife.Ihavefounditworthliving,andwouldgladlyliveitagain

ifthechancewereofferedme.

andtakesnaughtbutfromitself.Lovepossessesnot,norwoulditbepossessed,

forloveissufficientuntolove.

Lovehasnootherdesirebuttofulfillitself.Butifyouloveandmusthavedesires,

letthesebeyourdesires:

Tomeltandbelikearunningbrookthatsingsitsmelodytothenight.

Toknowthepainoftoomuchtenderness.

Tobewoundedbyyourownunderstandingoflove;

Andtobleedwillinglyandjoyfully.

Towakeatdawnwithawingedheartandgivethanksforanotherdayofloving;
