1.1CHOOSEPLACESTOCAMP

Choosingwheretocampandknowinghowtobeagoodshelterareessentialskills.Awidevarietyofhousingconstructionmethodsusingavailablematerialsaredescribed,fromthesimplestwindbreakstohousing

suitableforlong-termresidence.

Youneedtostartafireandchoosetherightfireproofstructure.Fireisneededforgeneralheatingandcookingpurposes.Guidanceonfoodpreparation,cookingandpreservationwillensurefoodsafety,notwaste.Camporganizationandhygieneareasimportanttothehealthandmoraleof

individualsurvivorsastheyaretothehealthandmoraleofalargegroupofsurvivors.

Makingtools,campequipment,clothes,ropesandnetswillimprovesurvival,

andknottingtechniqueswillbeuseful.

Shelterfromthewindandrain,warmth,tentsandtentsareessential.Sleepandadequaterestarenecessary,andthetimeandenergyyouspendinmakingyourresidencecomfortablewillmakethemmoreaccessible.Ifyouarethevictimofaplanecrashorvehicles,letyoudown,itisthetraditionaldwellingormaterialcouldbebuilt-butthethreatofatankifthereisafireorexplosion,untilitburnedbeforefishingifyouarenoabilitytothevictimsoftheaccident,isbeunexpectedfogorbynightfallonterrainisunsafe,ortiredorhurtmakeyougofurther,youmighthavetodowiththenight,oruntilyoucanmorefullyassessthesituation.Inthiscase,almostanyprotectionfromwind,rainandcoldwillbeprotected.Ifmovingdowntheslopeseemsrisky,ashortwalkalongthecontourlinemightkeepyououtofthewind.Iftherearenoholesorgapstocover,useanygapsontheground.Increaseitsheightbyheapingstonesifpossible-butmakesureanystructureisstable,usingtheleewardplatebeforelanding

onthedownwindsideifyouhaveabackpack.

Ifthere'sstilllighttosee,andyou'renotharmedinanywaytoholdyouback,norisolatedbytheinabilitytonegotiatecliffsorotherobstacles,it'sworthlookingforabetterplacenearby.Longcampyoushouldfindasafeplaceforeasyaccesstoyourmainneeds,ifyouareinahighexposedareaofthecamptofindashelter,butonalow,wetgroundyouneedtosafelyclimbhigherandfindaplacetodoit.Lookforashelter

fromthewind,onhighgroundwherethereisnodangerofflooding,andawayfrom

rockfallsoravalanches.

1.2BADPLACESTOCAMP

1Thetopofahillexposedtothewind(movedown,lookingforshelteronthe

leewardside).

2Thebottomofthevalleyanddeeppit-maybedamp,especiallywhenskiesare

clear,andmorepronetofrostatnight.

3Hillsideterraceswherethegroundremainsmoist.

Hotairrisesandcoldairsinks,sothevalleybottomswilloftencontainsomewetterairincoldweather,susceptibletofrostandmoistfog.Inrain-floodedareas,terracesonslopesoftenactasadisincentiveonandbelowsteepground,where

rainwateraccumulatesbeforeflowingfurtherdown.

Ideally,youshouldbenearwater,wherethereisaplentifulsupplyofwood.Tooclosetowater,whichcangetyouintrouble,insects,andthesoundofrunningwatercanhideothernoisesthatmayindicatedanger,orsearchorrescuepartysounds,lookforhighwatermarksonriverbanks:inmountainwaterwayscanbecomeseedsinminutes,risingashighas5meters(17feet)inanhour!Evenontheplain,stayawayfromoldwaterways,nomatterhowdrytheyare.Heavyrainfallinthesurroundingmountains

caneasilysendfloodwatersdownhillsides.

Inflashfloods,thereislittlewarning.Chooserelativelyflat,rockyground,andmakesureyouhaveenoughspacetodeploythesignalthatyoucaneasilybespottedby

rescuers.

Checkthenestsofbeesorwaspsoveryourhead,aswellasdeadwoodontreesthatcouldcollapseinthenextstormorgale.Stayawayfromisolatedtreesthatattractlightning,andapproachtheedgeoftheforestareawhereyoucanseewhat'sgoingonaroundyou.Don'tcampontheroadunlessyouwanttobetreatedasanunwelcomeguestbythemaraudinganimals,andalsowanttofindyourcampgroundflattenedbya

herdofanimalsonthewaytoapuddle,butclosetoanyvisiblehumanfootprint.

1.3SURVIVALTIPS:

UseWatchAsaCompass

Awatchcalibratedtostandardtimecanbeusedasacompassonaclearday.Putthewatchonaflatsurfacewiththehourhandpointingatthesun.Drawapointbetweenthehourhandandtwelve.Thelinepassingthroughthemarkfromthecenterofthedialwill

pointsouth.

HangaTarpWithoutUsingGrommets

Monkeyfistletsyoutieacordtoatarpaulinorboatcoverwhentheeyeistornor

missing.Todomonkeyboxing,squeezeagolfball--the"sizeofastone"--intoatarpatthejunction.Wraptheropearoundthesqueezepointonthetarpaulintwice,holdthe

rockinplace,thentiethelooseendoftheropetotheanchorpointandtighten.

MakeDEET-FreeBugSprayatHome

IfDEET-basedrepellentsirritateyourskin,youcanstillusethissafehomemade

formulatogetridofblackflies.Mixfourservingsofvegetableoilwithtwoservingsof

aloeveragelandoneservingofcitronella,cedarorsassafrasoil(availableat

pharmacies).Applyinsectrepellentheavilyonyourface,hands,andhairline,andwear

light-coloredclothing.Blackfliesespeciallylikedarkblue,brownandblack.

AFasterWaytoCutFirewoodWithaChainSaw

Cutwoodwithachainsaw,putalayeroflogsontheground,thenputanotherlayerontopandgointheoppositedirection.Stackseveralalternatinglayers.Thisenablesalllogstobesupported,sotheywillnotbindtothesawwhenyoustartcutting.Startwith

thelogsclosesttoyou,crossthedeck,andasyoucrossthelogs,clearthelogs.

FreezePre-MadeCarCampingMealsinZip-LocBags

Prepareseparatepre-cookedmealsathomeandfreezetheminairtightplasticbagstosimplifycampfiremealsbeforetraveling.Labelforeasyidentification.Frozenfoods

2.HOWTOPREPAREFORHURRICANE?

The2018hurricaneseasonbegininAugustandextendsuntiltheendofNovember.It'stimetothinkabouthowtoprotectyourselfandyourlovedonesproperlyduringthe

passageofadevastatingstorm.

Ifahurricaneisapproachingandyoucan'tmovetoasaferplace,followthesetipsfromthestateofficesofAARPFloridaandTexas.

Makeplanstosecureyourproperty.CoveryourWindowswithpermanentlouversor5/8inchesplywood.Bringalloutdoorfurniture,decorations,trashcansandanythingelsethatisnotfixed.Youdon'twantthosethingstoflyinthewindandhityourhouse.Makesurethetreesandshrubsaroundyourhomearewellprunedsothattheyaremorewind-resistantandclearanydrainsordrainsthatmaybeblockedbyrain.

Designatearoominyourhomeasasafezonetowaitinwhileridingoutastorm.Orconsiderbuildingasaferoom.Asaferoomisastormorinvadingfortification.Sincethismaybeexpensive,thechoiceistosimplydeterminethesafestroominthehome.Ideally,thisroomhasnowindowsandtoomuchfurniture.

Bepreparedtobeself-sufficientforatleastthreedays.Althoughgovernmentrescuerswillworkhardtodealwithmajordisasters,itwilltaketimetodeliverreliefsupplies.Youshouldatleastmanageforyourselfthreedays.Aweekwillbebetter.

Thinkaboutwhetheryourhealthcouldbeatriskifyouloseair-conditioning,freshwater,sewageserviceorotherservices.Althoughmanyolderpeoplecancopewellwithoutelectricity,thehealthofothersmaylimittheirabilitytowithstandheat,especiallywhentheyhavetostruggletoclimbstairsorcarryheavyobjects.

Ifyoudecidetorelocatebeforeorimmediatelyafterastorm,rememberthatit'softeneasiertogoonlyasfarasneededtoreachanareawhereservicesarestilloperatingnormally.Oftenthisisonly100or150milesfromhome.

Makeaplanforyourpets.Becausemanyofusconsiderpetstobefamilymembers,wecanhesitatetoevacuatewhennecessaryforfearofleavingouranimalsatrisk.

Ifyouneedassistanceduringandafterastorm,registerwithaspecial-needsshelterinyourarea.Toregister,callyourcountyemergencyoperationscenter.Thephonenumbercanbefoundinthebluepagesofyourphonebook.

3.1GettingreadyfortheHurricane.

Downloadnewsand

emergencyapplications.Ifyouhaveasmartdevice,youcan

downloadprofessional

applicationsthatconnectyoutoemergencyservicesorgiveyouthelatestnewsabouthurricanes.Inadditiontotelevisionand

radiobroadcasts,these

programswillhelpyoustaywellinformedduringthestorm.Someapplications

include:[1]theRedCrossHurricaneProgram.Astormtrackingsoftwarecalled

"UndergroundWeather"(WeatherUnderground).Wazeisatrafficandroadclosure

application.FEMAEmergency

PreparednessApplication.

Getasparebatteryandcar

chargerforyourphoneandcar.

Inamajorstorm,you'llwanttokeepyourphonepluggedin.Tomakesurethis

happens,buyasparebatteryincaseyourphonerunsoutofpower,andkeepacarchargerinyourcarincaseyourcarrunsoutofpower.

RememberNumbersforimportantphoneNumbersormakeawrittenlist.You

won'thavemuchtimetolookuppersonalphoneNumbersduringahurricane.So,typeinanynumberyouneedonyourphonebeforehand.Putimportantphone

Numbersonpaper,too,incaseyourphonegoesdeadordiesduringastorm.To

makecommunicationasquickandeasyaspossible,adjustthespeedofyourphonesothateachnumberconnectstoanimportantcontact.Ifpossible,stackyourwrittenlistsoitdoesn'tgetwashedawaybyrainorflooding.

Selectpeopleoutsidethedangerareaasthecentralcontact.Andinastorm,it's

impossibletoexamineeveryoneyourself.Therefore,establishanemergency

immediately.Evenifyourregionofferstext-based911services,don'trelyonitduringastorm.

Ifthecallfails,waitatleast10secondsbetweencalls.Becauseofthevolumeofcalls,yourphonemayneedseveralattemptstogetthroughsuccessfully.However,redialingimmediatelyafterafailedcallcanplaceagreaterburdenonthenetwork

andreduceyourchancesofgettingthrough.Toavoidthis,waitatleast10secondsbetweeneachattempt.
