willoutlivetheGuggenheimasaninternationalarchitecturalicon—becauseit
didallthedifficultworktint.
Inthepantheon(萬神殿)ofclassicmodernbuildings,Utzon'screationhasthe
statusofmyth.Themythstatesthattheunknownarchitect,theninhisthirties,
submittedroughsketchestothecompetitionjudges,thatheignoredmostof
therules,thathisasonlyselectedafterbeingpluckedatthelastmomentfrom
therejectedpilebyoneofthejudges,andthatthedesignwasunbuildable.
ButSydneyisremarkableforanotherreason:itisacompleteone-off.Itdoes
notfitintoanystylisticorchronologicalcategory.NoneofUtzon'sother
buildings—churches,governmentdepartments,house,looksanythinglikeit,
andarchitectstodaywhotrytocopyhisconceptalwaysenduplookingvery
second-rateindeed.Itis"modern",certainly,butitisanexpressive
modernismthatwasquiteatoddswiththerectilinear(直線的)“international
style"ofitstime.IthasmoreincommonwiththeworkoftheAmerican
geniusFrankUloydWright,forwhomUtzonworkedbriefly.Ofcourseits
locationisanenormoushelp,sittingasitdoesonapromontorywithwateron
threesidesandthefamousSydneyHarborBridgeasapicture-postcard
backdrop.ButUtzonmasterlyexploitedthesiteasnobodyelsecould.
UtzonleftAustraliainhighindignationin1966,nevertoreturn,beforehe
couldfinishdesigningtheinteriors.
AswithSirChristopherWrenatStPaul'sCathedral,Utzonwashumiliated
andremovedfromoverseeingthefinalstagesofhismasterwork.Butforall
hismanifolddifficulties,whichothercontemporaryarchitectcanclaiman
equivalentachievement?TheSydneyOperaHouseshowedusthatanything
ispossible,anditdemonstratedthatsheer,seductivebeautyforitsownsake
isnothingtobeashamedof.
