TherearemanydifferentstylesofTaiji,butmostmodernschoolscantracetheirdevelopmenttothesystemoriginallytaughtbytheChenfamilyorthatbytheYangfamily.TheMandarinterm"TaijiQuan"derivesitsnamefromtheconceptofthe"supremeultimate",whichisthesymboloftheTaijitumeanttoshowtheprinciplesofYinandYangdualityofTaoistphilosophy.Thus,TaijitheoryandpracticeevolvedinlinewithmanyoftheprinciplesofChinesephilosophyandTaoisminparticular.Taijitrainingfirstandforemostinvolveslearningsoloroutines,knownas"forms"ortaolu.Paradoxicalally,whiletheimageofTaijiinpopularcultureistypifiedbyexceedinglyslowmovement,manyTaijistyleshavesecondoryformsofafasterpace.TheothercharacteristicoftraditionalTaijitrainingarepartnerexercisesknownas"handspushing".Taijischoolsdonotgenerallyrequireauniform，butbothtraditionalandmodernteachersoftenadvocateloose，comfortableclothingandflat-soledshoes.Taijihasbecomeverypopularinthelasttwentyyearsorso;manyhospitals,clinics,communityandseniorcentershostclassesincommunitiesaroundtheworld.

ModernTaiChiStandardizeandsimplifyin1956.combinedformsfromfouroftheoriginalstyles.becomeanintegralpartofinternationalWushutournamentcompetition.In1990,Wushuwasincludedasasportforcomppetitionwiththe42FormTaijiisoftenpromotedasalow-impactformorgeriatricexercise.OutdoorpracticeisthemostcommoninChina,asopposedtotheWesternconceptofexerciseingym.121Today,someprominentTaijiteachershaveadvocatedsubjectingTaiChitorigorousscientificstudiestogainacceptanceintheWest.2Researchershavefoundthatlong-termTaiChipracticeshowssomefavorablebutstatisticallyinsignifican
