JackLondon(1876-1916)isanAmericanworldwiderenownednovelist,journalistandsocialactivist.HisrepresentativeworksincludetheCalloftheWild,MartinEden,SonoftheWolf,WhiteFang,etc.

Heissaidtobeanaturalchild.In1889,hebeganworking12to18hoursforadayatHickmott’sCannery.In1894,hespent30daysforvagrancyintheErieCountyPenitentiaryatBuffalo.Aftermanyexperiencesasahoboandasailor,hereturnedtoOaklandandattendedOaklandHighSchool.Hecontributedanumberofarticlestothehighschool'smagazine.Hisfirstpublishedworkwasanaccountofhissailingexperiences.

Hisnovelssuccefullyreflectthecontradictoryviewsofman’snatureanddestinyinandagainstthewild.

TheCalloftheWild(1903)

TheCalloftheWildisLondon’smost-readbook,andgenerallyconsideredhisbest,themostmasterpieceofhisso-called“earlyperiod”.Thestorywassetin19th-centuryKlondikeGoldRush,inwhichsleddogswereboughtatgenerousprices.

BuckwasadomesticdoginJudgeMiller’shomeandlivingacomfortablelifeuntilhewassoldsecretlybythepoorgardenerandbecameasleddog.BuckwasaBernarddogweighedonehundredandfortypounds,tall,strong,andheavymuscled.Hecouldn’taccommodatetotheharshconditionatfirst.Andhewantedtofight,toescape,togobacktohiscozyhome,butinvain.

Themaninredtaughthimthelawofstickandclub—onemustfirstadjusthimselftohissurroundingsandlearntherules,andonlyafterthathecandowhathewantstodo.TheclubofthemaninredcalledbackBuck’snatureasadog.

WhenhefirstlyservedforFran?oisandPerrault,twocouriers,heshowedhissuperiorabilitytoadapttotheenvironmentandhissmartnetolearneverythinghewantedtolearn.Curly’sdeathastonishedhimandtaughthimtobecautious.AndbeforehehadrecoveredfromtheshockcausedbythetragicpaingofCurly,hewasharneedasasleddogandstepbystepwantedtobetheleader.Buttheleadingdog,Spitz,was

alreadyanexcellentone,whoalsoconsideredBuckasenemyandpotentialcompetitor.Atlast,whenSpitzoncepunishedhim,hurlingbackwardBuck,heknewthetimehadcome.HekilledSpitzandtookhisplace.

WhentheypulledintoDawson,Buckwassoldasuselethingtothreegolddiggers,whoweren’tveteraninsleddingandevendidn’tknowhowtogettotheirdestination.Foodwaseatenuphalfway.SoCharles,oneofthethree,decidedtokillBuckwhenhecouldn’tgetup.However,whenheaimedatBuck,JohnThorntonspranguponhim,knockedhimdownandtoldhimthatifCharlesstrokeBuck,Thorntonwouldkillhim.

Thus,ThorntontookBuckaway.HewastheonlytruefriendofBuck.ButBuckwasathingofthewild,especiallywhenthecallingofwolffromthehills.Oncewhenhecamebackfromhills,hefoundthatThorntonwaskilledbyIndians.WhatwouldyoudoifyouwereBuckwhenyourbelovedfriendwaskilled?BuckbecameanutandkilledthoseheadsmenandstayedwithThorntonfortwodaysandnights,neverleavingThorntonoutofhissight.Andthenanearbywolfhowlcaptureshisears,andhefollowsthesoundtoanapproachingwolfpack,battlingseveralofthesecreaturestoprovehisworth.

BeautifulLanguage

Itwasbeautifulspringweather,butneitherdogsnorhumanswereawareofit.Eachdaythesunroseearlierandsetlater.Itwasdawnbythree

inthemorning,andtwilightlingeredtillnineatnight.Thewholelongdaywasablazeofsunshine.Theghostlywintersilencehadgivenwaytothegreatspringmurmurofawakeninglife.Thismurmurarosefromalltheland,fraughtwiththejoyofliving.Itcamefromthethingsthatlivedandmovedagain,thingswhichhadbeenasdeadandwhichhadnotmovedduringthelongmonthsoffrost.Thesapwasrisinginthepines.Thewillowsandaspenswereburstingoutinyoungbuds.Shrubsandvineswereputtingonfreshgarbsofgreen.Cricketssanginthenights,andinthedaysallmannerofcreeping,crawlingthingsrustledforthintothesun.Partridgesandwoodpeckerswereboomingandknockingintheforest.Squirrelswerechattering,birdssinging,andoverheadhonkedthewild-fowldrivingupfromthesouthincunningwedgesthatsplittheair.(ChapterVtheToilofTraceandTrail)

Hewasbeaten(heknewthat);buthewasnotbroken.Hesaw,onceforall,thathestoodnochanceagainstamanwithaclub.Hehadlearnedtheleon,andinallhisafterlifeheneverforgotit.(ChapterIintothePrimitive)

Myunderstanding
