課本原文:Throughouthistory,thegreatthinkersoftheworldhaveoftenratherromanticallyreferredtotheiracademicstrugglesasbeinglike“war”.However,formostofthem,the“war”hasbeenpurelysymbolic.Realwarisneverromanticasitbringssufferingandimmensechallenges.In1937,theaggressionoftheJapanesearmybroughtdisastertoChina’sthreegreatuniversities:PekingUniversityandTsinghuaUniversitywereoccupiedbyJapanesetroops,whileNankaiUniversitywascompletelydestroyedbybombing.Tosavetheireducationalandintellectualheritage,thethreeuniversitiesjoinedtogetherinKunmingasNationalSouthwestAssociatedUniversity,otherwiseknownasLianda.Professorsandstudentsalikeinthethreeuniversitiesmadeanepicjourneyoveradistanceofmorethan2,000kilometres,mostofthemonfoot.Theirbedwasthedustyroadandtheirroofwastheopensky,oftenlitupbyexplodingJapanesebombs.Conditionswerelittlebetteroncetheyreachedtheremoteandmountainoussouth-westpartofChina.Theyhadtoliveinroughbuildings,packed40toaroom,likesardines.Thereweredireshortagesoffood,books,andequipment.Furthermore,classeswerefrequentlydisruptedduetofierceairattacksandoftenhadtobeheldbefore10amandafter4pm.However,despitetheimmensehardshipsandthedauntingchallenges,itwasrightinthisplace,overaperiodofeightlongyears,thatthenation’sintellectualheritagewasnotonlyguardedbutfortifiedbythepassionandbeliefoftheworthyacademicsofLianda.Itisnowonderthatmany,ifnotmost,ofChina’sleadingscholarsandscientistsemergedatLianda,includingthetwoNobelPrize-winningphysicists,YangZhenningandLiZhengdao.“LiandalaidthefoundationforeveryachievementIhavemade,”Yangrecalled.Hestillrememberslearninginatemporaryclassroomthathadnoglassinthewindows.“Onwindydays,wehadtoholddownthepaperonthedesk,whichwouldotherwisebeblownaway,”hesaid.Withthecountryatwar,studentsatLiandawerenotgoingtoshirktheirduty.Drivenbyasenseofcommitment,agreatmanyjoinedthearmytoresisttheJapaneseinvadersanddefendthehonourofthenation.Infact,Liandaprovidedthelargestnumberofstudent-soldiersfromanycampusinChina.OfthethousandsofcollegestudentsfromalloverChinawhoservedasinterpreters,onetenthwerefromLianda,includingthewell-knowntranslatorsZhaLiangzhengandXuYuanchong.Zhalaterdepictedthecontributionsofhispeersinapoem:Softly,onthehillsideforgottenbyall,Amistyrainfallsinagentlebreeze;Thereisnotraceofthefootprintsofhistory;Wherebravesoulsoncestood,breathingnewlifeinto
