experimentingwithpassingelectriccurrentsthroughcertaingasesinaspecial
glasstubefromwhichtheairhadbeentakenaway.ThenonedayRoentgen
noticedthatthoughthetubewascoveredwithblackpaper,somestrange
kindsofradiation(輻射)we'recomingthroughandmakingascreennearby
giveoutlight.Roentgencouldseenothingoutofthetube.Butthenhe
discoveredthatifheputthescreeninthenextroomontheothersideofthe
closeddoor,theraysstillseemedtoaffectit.Thescreenshowedthattherays
couldpassnotonlythroughtheblackpaperbutalsothroughwood.
Thenextthinghefoundoutwasthatifheputhishandsbetweentherays
andaphotographicplate,therayswouldprintashadowofthebone
frameworkofhishandsontheplate.Infact,therayscouldpassaseasily
throughthefleshy(肉的)partofhishandasthroughtheblackpaper,but
hardlyatallthroughthebone.SoRoentgenmadethefirstX-raypictureofa
handshowingjusthowthebonesinthehandfittedtogether.
