Longago,poemswererecitedoutloudinsteadofbeingwrittendown.WhentheGreeksfirst

startedtheOlympics,theyheldpoetrycontestsaswellasathleticcompetitions.

competedinthefirstPoetryOutLoudnationalrecitationcontest,performingpoemsfrommemory

for$100,000inprizes.

alongwiththeDistrictofColumbiachampion,descendeduponWashington,D.C.,lastweekfor

theultimateshowdown.Afterthe51championscompetedagainstoneanother,12wentontothe

finals.ThenthefieldwasnaiTowedtofive.Thefinalfivehadonelastchanceto“perform"a

poem.Theoverallchamp,JacksonHille,ahighschoolseniorfromOhio,wona$20,000

scholarship.

TheNationalEndowmentfortheArtsandthePoetryFoundationstartedPoetryOutLoud

becausetheyrealizedthathearingapoemperformedisadifferentexperiencefromreadingitona

page.

It'snotjustamatterofsayingthewordsintherightorder.It'sthetoneofvoice,thepauses,

thegestures,andtheattitudeofthepersonperformingthatbringthewordstolife."Eachtimewe
