Themostimportantreasonisthattheyareaboutthedailyactivitiesofordinarypeople,andtheyusuallycenteraroundasmallcommunityoralargefamily.However,soapoperasaremuchmoredramaticthanreallife.Itallowsthescriptwritertocreateacomplicatedplot,withfiveorsixdifferentstorylinesallrunningatthesametime.Thestoriesareusuallybasedonproblemswithinpersonalrelationshipsandfamilylife,sotheviewerscaneasilyidentifywiththefeelingsandopinionsofthecharacters.Theycanseethatthelivesofthepeopleonthescreenarenotsoverydifferentfromtheirown.

SomeviewersevenstarttothinkoftheTVcharactersasrealfriendsandfamily.Theywriteletterstotheirfavorites,givingthemadviceandofferingtheirownopinion,andsometimescopytheirstylesofdressandbehavior.Eventslikebirths,weddingordeathsinsoapsarealwaysfollowedwithgreatinterest.Ifafavoritecharacterisunfairlytreated,thisusuallyprovokesstrongreactions.Inonefamoussoap,awomanwassenttoprison,andviewersstartedanationalcampaigntohavehersetfree.

Soapmayalsobepopularbecausetheyoffereasyentertainment.Viewersdon’thavetoconcentrateveryhardtofollowthestory.Thesamecharactersareseeneveryday,andthestoriesmovealongquiteslowly.Ifviewersareforcedtomisstheirfavoritesoapforacoupleofweeks,there’snoneedtoworry.Theyonlyneedtowatchoneortwoepisodestocatchupagain.Thisisbecausethescriptconstantlyrefersbacktopastevents,andbecauseeachstorylinetakesalongtimetodevelop.

Anotherimportantreasonwhysoapsattractlargeaudiencesistheuseofatechniquecalledthe“cliff-hanger”ending.Thismeansthateachepisodealwaysendsatacriticalpointinthestory.Adramaticincidentsuchasanargumentisdeliberatelycutshortbytheclosingtitlesequence.Thetechniquealmostguaranteesthatthousandsofviewerswilltuneintothenextepisodetofindoutwhathappensnext.
