1ItisAugust1939,andagroupoffrightenedchildrenareboardingatrainatPrague’sWilsonStation.Theirheartbrokenparentsdonotjointhem.Indeed,theyfeartheymayneverseetheirchildrenagain.Buttheyknowthattheirchildrenwilllive.Theseareamongthe669children,mostofthemJewish,thatNicholasWintonwillgoontosavefromdeathatthehandsoftheNazis.

2NicholasWintonwasbornon19May1909inLondon,toGerman-Jewishparents.ThefamilylatertookBritishnationality.Onleavingschool,WintonworkedinbanksinGermanyandFrance.HereturnedtoBritainin1931,whereheworkedinbusiness.

3InDecember1938,afriendaskedWintontocometoPraguetoaidpeoplewhowereescapingfromtheNazis.InPrague,Wintonsawpeoplelivinginterribleconditionsandwhoseliveswereindanger.HedecidedtohelptransportchildrentosafetyinBritain.Heestablishedanofficetokeeprecordsofthechildren,andthenreturnedtoBritaintofindtemporaryhomesforthem.Heuseddonatedfundsandhisownmoneytopaythe50poundsperchildthattheBritishgovernmentrequired.ByAugust1939,Wintonhadsaved669children.

4DuringWorldWarⅡ,WintonservedasanofficerinBritain’sRoyalAirForce.Heleftthemilitaryin1954.Hethenworkedforinternationalcharitiesandforvariouscompanies.Forthemostpart,hedidnotmentionthechildrenhesaved,andhisactionssoondisappearedfrompeople’smemories.

5Thatallchangedin1988whenhiswifeGretefoundaforgottenjournalathome.Thejournalcontainedphotographsandnamesofthechildrenandaddressesofthefamiliesthattookthemin.Shesentthejournaltoanewspaper,andthatyearWintonwasseenontheBritishtelevisionprogrammeThat’sLife.Atonepoint,thehostaskedpeopleintheaudiencetostandupifNicholasWintonhadsavedtheirlives.AshockedWintonwatchedasthemajorityofpeoplerosetotheirfeet.Theprogrammebroughthisactionstopublicattention,andWintonbecamearespectedfigurearoundtheworld.
