Introduction

Historically,theproductionofrailwayvehiclesandtheircomponents,forthemainpart,comprisessuchmaterialsassteelsandaluminiumalloys.Theirmethodsofconstructionandassemblyincludesuchprocessesasbolting,riveting,andwelding.

RailwayvehicleswithinthemeaningofthisdocumentaredefinedinEN15380-1[47].

Technologicaldevelopmentshaveledtotheavailabilityofothermaterials,e.g.composites,andsomeofthesetraditionalmethodsofconstructionasbolting,riveting,andweldingandassemblyarenotnecessarilyappropriateorsuitableforsuchmaterials.

Forthisreason,aprocessofadhesivebondingcanbeessentialfortheproductionofcertainrailwayvehiclesandtheircomponents,notonlyinthecaseofcompositesbutforsteelsandaluminiumalloysaswellasglassandothermaterials.

Theconfirmationofthequalityandintegrityofthefinaladhesivelybondedjointsdonotreadilylendthemselvestotraditionalinspectionandtestingtechniquessuchasnon-destructivetesting.

Therefore,itisessentialthatthequalityandcontroloftheadhesivelybondedjointsofassembliesandcomponentsismanagedtothebestpossiblelevelbymeansofanappropriateprocesscontrolprocedure.
