DelmoreSchwartzwasbornin1913inBrooklyn,NewYork.Hisparents,HarryandRose,bothRomanianJews,separatedwhenSchwartzwasnine,andtheirdivorcehadaprofoundeffectonhim.In1930,Schwartz’sfathersuddenlydiedattheageof49.SchwartzspenttimeatColumbiaUniversityandtheUniversityofWisconsinbeforefinallygraduatingfromNewYorkUniversityin1935.HethendidsomegraduateworkinphilosophyatHarvardUniversity,wherehestudiedwiththephilosopherAlfredNorthWhitehead,butleftandreturnedtoNewYorkwithoutreceivingadegree.Soonthereafter,hemadehisparents’disastrousmarriagethesubjectofhismostfamousshortstoryInDreamsBeginResponsibilities.PartOne:

TextAisthefirstpartofInDreamsBeginResponsibilities,ashortstorybyDelmoreSchwartz.Thestorywasfirstpublishedin1937inthefirstissueofthePartisanReview.Thisstoryandothershortstoriesandpoemsbecamehisfirstbook,alsoentitledInDreamsBeginResponsibilities,publishedin1938whenSchwartzwasonly25yearsold.Thebookwaswellreceived,andmadehimawell-knownfigureinNewYorkintellectualcircles.Hisworkreceivedpraisefromsomeofthemostrespectedpeopleinliterature,includingT.S.Eliot,WilliamCarlosWilliams,andEzraPound,andSchwartzwasconsideredoneofthemostgiftedandpromisingyoungwritersofhisgeneration.OfallofSchwartz’sstories,itisprobablyhisbest-knownandmostinfluential.2.AboutthestoryPartOne:
