2.Thecharactersandthesymbolicmeaningofimages.Throughoutthebook,Saint-Exupéryisverycriticalofmanyofthecharacteristicsofmankind.Heclaimsthathumansaretoopreoccupiedwithwealth,power,andtechnology,whichmakesthemmisstheimportantthingsinlife--beauty,love,andfriendship.Becausetheydonotinvestthetimeinlovingothersandnoticingthesmallwondersoftheworld,peoplerushfromplacetoplaceinsearchofsomething;butsincetheylookforthewrongthings,theyareneverhappywithwheretheyareandrushonwardagain,muchlikethetrainsthattheswitchmancontrols.Peoplearealsodupedintobelievingthatfactsandfiguresareimportant,justlikethegeographer.However,thefactsoftenhidethetruthandcauseapersontomissoutonthetruemeaningoflife.Inasimilarmanner,whenahumansucceedsandaccumulatessomewealth,theyspendalloftheirtimecountingtheirassetsinsteadofinvestingitintheimportantthingsoflife.Whentheyfinallyrealizetheirliveshavenomeaning,peoplethenturntocrutches,suchasalcohol,believingthatthesethingscansupplytheanswer;intruth,theansweralwaysliesinsideifapersonwillonlyseekthetruthbeneaththesurface.2.1ThecharactersThemainthemeofTheLittlePrinceistheimportanceoflookingbeneaththesurfacetofindtherealtruthandmeaningofathing.ItisthefoxwhoteachesthePrincetoseewithone’sheartinsteadofjustwithone’seyes.Unfortunately,mostadultshavedifficultiesindoingthis.Inthebeginningofthebook,thenarratorpointsouthowgrown-upscanneverseetherealmeaningofadrawing;instead,theylookatthesurface,failingtoprobeadeepermeaning.Next,I’llanalysisofthemajorcharactersofthefollowingimages,thenarrator,thelittleprince,thefox,thesnake,thebaobabtree.Thisessayisdesignedtochallengeastudent'sunderstandingofthebroadpointsinawork,interactionsamongthecharacters,andmainpointsandthemesofthetext.But,theyalsocovermanyoftheotherissuesspecifictotheworkandtotheworldtoday.Itisinthischildren'sbookthatIfoundtheessentialmeaningoflife.2.1.1ThenarratorThenarratorofTheLittlePrinceisanadultinyears,butheexplainsthathewasrejuvenatedsixyearsearlierafterhecrashedhisplaneinthedesert.Hewasanimaginativechildwhosefirstdrawingwasacrypticinterpretationofaboaconstrictorthathadswallowedanelephant.Eventually,heabandonedartforthegrown-upprofessionofpilot,andhelivesalonelylifeuntilheencountersthelittleprince.Heservesastheprince’sconfidenceandrelaystheprince’sstorytous,butthenarratorisreallytheauthor,AntoinedeSaint-Exupéry.Thenarratorispresentthroughoutthebooktotellthestoryofhisfriendshipwiththelittleprinceandcommentonwhathehaslearnedfromhim.HeisveryattractedtothePrince,largelybecauseheischildlike,innocent,andpure.Thenarratoradmitsthathepreferstheopenness,honesty,andnaivetéofchildrentothepretensionsandblindnessofadults,whocannotseebeyondthesurfaceoflife.Thenarratorfeelsveryclosetothelittleprincebecauseheisabletoseethetruthandimportanceofthings.Evenaftersixyears,herememberseverythingaboutthislittlemanfromanotherplanet;asaresult,hewritesthebookinmemoryofhim.Eversincechildhood,thenarratorhasfeltfrustratedwithadults.Asayoungboy,hedrewpicturesofaboaconstrictoreatinganelephant,butnoneoftheadultscouldseetherealmeaningbeyondthesurfaceofthepicture.Theyallclaimedthedrawinglookedlikeahat.Whenthenarratorexplainedwhatthepicturereallywas,theadultssuggestedthathegiveupdrawingandpurposehisacademicstudies.Whenthenarratorshowsthelittleprinceadrawingofaboaeatinganelephant,heimmediatelyrecognizesitforwhatitis.Thenarratorisgreatlyimpressedandinstantlylikesthelittleprince.Thenarrator’sairplanecrashesintothedesert.Whileheistryingtorepairit,thelittleprincesuddenlyappearsandaskshimtodrawapictureofasheepforhim.Soonastrongbondoffriendshipdevelopsbetweenthetwoofthem.2.1.2ThelittleprinceThenovelisnamedafterthelittleprince,whoisamysticalandloveableperson.Heisachildwholivesinaverysmallworld.Heisverycuriousandneverletgoofaquestion,oncehehadaskedit.
ThelittleprinceisapureandinnocenttravelerfromouterspacewhomthenarratorencountersintheSaharadesert.BeforethelittleprincelandsonEarth,Saint-Exupérycontraststheprince’schildlikecharacterwithdifferentadultcharactersbyhavingtheprincehopfromoneneighboringplanettoanother.Oneachplanet,theprincemeetsadifferenttypeofadultandrevealsthatcharacter’sfrivolitiesandweaknesses.OnceonEarth,however,thelittleprincebecomesastudentaswellasateacher.Fromhisfriendthefox,thelittleprincelearnswhatloveentails,andinturnhepassesonthoselessonstothenarrator.
Thelittleprincehasfewoftheglaringflawsevidentintheothercharacters.Mostnotably(顯著地),theprinceisboundbyhislovefortherosehehasleftonhishomeplanet.Hisconstantquestioningalsoindicatesthatone’ssearchforanswerscanbemoreimportantthantheanswersthemselves.LittlePrincelikeswatchingsunsets.Onhislittleplanetallhehadtodowasshifthischairtowatchasunset.OnourplanetEarth,sunsetoccursatdifferenttimesindifferentcountries.Probablythereissomeapplicationofthiswhichcanbeusedincommunication.Usingsunasthecentreofcommunication!HerePrincealsosaysthathefeelssadwhilewatchingsunsets.Thisisprobablyoneofthingswhichsuggestthatchildrenorforthatmatterevenadultssometimescannotexplaintheirmoodswings!2.1.3ThefoxThefoxappearsquitesuddenlyandinexplicablywhiletheprinceismourningtheordinarinessofhisroseafterhavingcomeacrosstherosegarden.Whenthefoximmediatelysetsaboutestablishingafriendshipbetweenhimselfandtheprince,itseemsthatinstructionisthefox’ssolepurpose.Yetwhenhebegsthelittleprincetotamehim,thefoxappearstobethelittleprince’spupilaswellashisinstructor.Inhislessonsabouttaming,thefoxarguesfortheimportanceofceremoniesandrituals(儀式),showingthatsuchtoolsareimportantevenoutsidethestrictworldofgrown-ups.Saidthefox,"Tome,youarestillnothingmorethanalittleboywhoisjustlikeahundredthousandotherlittleboys.AndIhavenoneedofyou.Andyou,onyourpart,havenoneedofme.Toyou,Iamnothingmorethanafoxlikeahundredthousandotherfoxes.Butifyoutameme,thenweshallneedeachother.Tome,youwillbeuniqueintheentireworld.Toyou,Ishallbeuniqueintheentireworld...”狐貍說(shuō):“對(duì)我來(lái)說(shuō),你還只是一個(gè)小男孩,就像其他千萬(wàn)個(gè)小男孩一樣。我不需要你。你也同樣用不著我。對(duì)你來(lái)說(shuō),我也不過(guò)是一只狐貍,和其他千萬(wàn)只狐貍一樣。但是,如果你馴服了我,我們就互相不可缺少了。對(duì)我來(lái)說(shuō),你就是世界上唯一的了;我對(duì)你來(lái)說(shuō),也是世界上唯一的了?!?/p>

Thefoxteachestheprince"Itisonlywiththeheartthatonecanseerightly;whatisessentialisinvisibletotheeye”andonresponsibility,""Menhaveforgottenthistruth,"saidthefox.”Butyoumustnotforgetit.Youbecomeresponsible,forever,forwhatyouhavetamed.Youareresponsibleforyourrose...”Thisresponsibilityinterrelationcreatesinpeople.Showineveryrespectinthesociallife.It’satransmutationoflove,andit’sthedistillationoflove.Itletsmeknowitislovethatmakestheworldgoesround,alsomakesourlifestrongandwarm.Thankstolove,wecantasteacolorfullifenomatteritisbitter,sweet,sour,andhot.Loveisakindofresponsibility.Receivingseveralversionsofexplanation,Ipreferthisone.Littleprincedidn’tfallinlovewiththefox,butlearnedwhatlovewasfromit.Itdoesn’tmakeanysenseifthefoxwassupposedtobeintelligentwithoutanyemotion;atleastthelittleprincedomesticatedthefox.Perhapstheauthordidn’tfavortheperfectrolethatwasverywillingtosacrifice.Whathereallylovedwastherosethatissweetbutwithflaws.Therosecouldberegardedasanythingthatpeopleareeagerfor,however,it'smorelikelytobeasymboloflover.2.1.5Eventhoughthesnakethelittleprinceencountersinthedesertspeaksinriddles,hedemandslessinterpretationthantheothersymbolicfiguresinthenovel.Thesnakealsohaslesstolearnthanmanyoftheothercharacters.Thegrown-upsonthevariousplanetsaretoonarrow-mindedfortheirowngood,andtheprinceandthenarratoredgeclosertoenlightenment(教化,啟蒙),buttheserpent(大毒蛇;陰險(xiǎn)的人)doesnotrequireanswersorevenaskquestions.Infact,thesnakeissoconfidentthathehasmasteredlife’smysteriesthathetellstheprincehespeaksonlyinriddlesbecausehecansolveallriddles.Inastoryaboutmysteries,thesnakeistheonlyabsolute.Hispoisonousbiteandbiblicalallusionindicatethatherepresentstheunavoidablephenomenonofdeath.Thesnakeinformthelittleprincethattoknowwellaboutthedeepermysteriesoflife,healsotellyoungPrincewhyhesayitthatwaskindofmysteriousisbecauseheknowabouttheanswer.
2.1.6ThebaobabtreeOnthelittleprince’splanettherewere“terribleseeds…baobabseeds”thatinfestedthesoil.Hewasmostearnesttofindoutastowhetherthesheepwouldeatbaobabsornot.Ifthesproutswerenotduguporeatensoonenoughtheywouldovergrowtheentireplanetandtheir“rootspiercerightthrough”.Thisenquirycarriesasenseofurgencythathasgreaterimplicationsthanmeetstheeye.Justasgoodandbadseedslielatentinthesoil,sotoodoseedsofunknownpotentiallieintherecessesofthemind.Shouldthegoodseedssproutandgrow,thenthethoughts,theimagination,freeoffetters,giveforthwondrousfruits.However,shouldtheimaginationbethwartedbytheconstrictionsofthetangibleworld,byoveremphasisontheimportanceofthosethingsthatbearonlyuponoursenses,thenindeed,“it’salwaysacatastrophe”?Itistheresultofthe“seedofabadplant”thathasnotbeenrecognizedearlyenough.If“youattendtoabaobabtoolate,youcannevergetridofitagain”,foronceithasgrown,noforce,(notevenelephants),canremoveitbecauseithassentitsrootssodeep.Thegrown-upslikethosewhodon’trecognizedrawingNumberOnehavehadtheirimaginationsstifledbythebaobabtrees,bythelimitationsofthephysicalrealm.Theyresemblethelazymanwhoseplanetwasovertakenbybaobabs.Hehad“neglectedthreebushes”and,asshownintheillustration,hisentireplanetisconstrictedbytherootsofthebaobabtrees…justasaboaconstrictshisprey…likeamindisconstrictedbythetangible.Theartistvividlyconveysthebiggestofhisdrawingsduetohisown“senseofurgency”regardingthematter.Hefeelstheresponsibilityofalertingthechildren,atthebehestoftheprince,to“adangerwhichthey,likeme,havelongbeenunaware”.Fortheartisthimself,washenot,unabletoseea“sheepthroughthesidesofacrate”.2.2AnalysisthesymbolicmeaningofTheLittlePrince
Throughouthisbook,Saint-Exupéryemphasizestheimportanceoflookingbeneaththesurfacetofindtruebeautyinevencommonthings.ThestarofTheLittlePrincebecomesspecialandbeautifulbecauseitishometohisuniquerose,madespecialbylove.Thenarratorcommentsonthelittleprince’slove:“WhatmovesmesodeeplyaboutthisLittlePrince,whoissleepinghere,ishisloyaltytoaflower--theimageofarosethatshinesthroughhiswholebeingliketheflameofalamp,evenwhenheisasleep.”Whatmakesthelittleprincesospecialisthisabilitytolovefullyandcompletely.Intheend,itislovethatgivesmeaningtoallexistence.Withoutit,manislostandaloneonthedesert,muchlikethenarratoruntilheencounteredandbefriendedthelittleprince.
