–In1914A.PiattAndreworganizedtheAmericanFieldService(AFS)whosemissionwastotransportwoundedFrenchsoldiers.AFS90YearHistoryA.PiattAndrew,founderoftheAmericanFieldServicewithStephenGalatti,AdjutantinthecarparkatAFSParisHeadquarters,1917AFS90YearHistoryWWI-By1917,AFShadgrownto2,500driverswhohadcarriedmorethan500,000wounded.AFS90YearHistoryWWI-HeadquartersofSSU10inKoritza,Albania,1917.AFSservedintheBalkanswiththeFrencharmyoftheOrientAFS90YearHistoryBetweenthewars-UponA.PiattAndrew’sdeath,StephenGalattibecameDirectorGeneraloftheorganizationin1936StephenGalattihelpedcreateAFSFellow-shipsinFrenchUniversitieswhichsent222collegestudentsbothtoandfromtheUnitedStatesbetween1919and1952.AFS90YearHistoryInSeptember1939whenWWIIbegan,StephenGalattire-organizedAFSasavolunteerambulancecorpswhichservedinFrance,NorthAfrica,MiddleEast,andItaly.AFS90YearHistoryAFSdriversevacuatedthewoundedoftheBritishFourteenthandTwelftharmiesinIndiaBurma.

AFS90YearHistoryAfterthewar,StephenGalattiand250AFSdriverspledgedtosustaintheirtraditionofinternationalserviceandcreatedtheAFSInternationalScholarships.AFS90YearHistoryAFSbustripphoto,1952AFS90YearHistoryAtthetimeofStephenGalatti’sdeathin1964,theAFSprogramsincluded60countries.AFS90YearHistoryIn1950s-1960sAFSstudentsandchaperonesonthewestboundcrossingofthem/sSevenSeas,August25,1964

AFS90YearHistory1970s-80sMultinationalizationoftheprogramwasrealizedin1971withtheintroductionofmultinationalstudentsexchangesbetweencountriesotherthantheU.S.AFS90YearHistoryAFS90YearHistoryInthe1990’sAFSbeganitsCommunityServiceProgramsandextendeditsnetworkto52countries.AFS90YearHistoryToday350,000participantsandhostfamilieshavetakenpartinAFSexchangesfacilitatedby100,000volunteers.AFS90YearHistoryAprofoundideabornofwar,AFStodayisaleaderinthefieldofinternationalculturalexchange.AFS90YearHistoryWWIIAmbulancedriversattheAFSWorldCongressinBelgiumin2000,AFSTrusteespicturedaboveare
