Americanfamiliesmayhaveborrowedirresponsibly,andmayhaveelectedpoliticianswhoborrowevenmoreirresponsiblyontheirbehalf,butthetypicalAmericanfamilyisnotbankrupt.Theaveragecoupleage65-74hasaccumulatedanetworth(notcountingentitlementpromisesaseitherassetsorliabilities)of$691,000,accordingtotheFederalReservein2004.Shortlythereafter,ofcourse,theystarttodieinlargenumbers.Andwhathappenstothe$691,0007Generallyitgoestothechildrenandgrandchildren.

It'softensaid,onthesubjectofunderfundedentitlements,thatweare"robbingfuturegenerations."Thisisnotcompletelytrue.Youcan'tliterallysteal,say,avacationhomefromtheyear2050andplantitnexttoabeautifullakein2009.Norcanyoubeg,borroworstealmoneyin2050andspenditin2009.Butyoucanreduceyoursavingsratein2009,spendthemoneyinsteadandleavealessprosperouscountryin2050.Andifyouborrowmoneyfromforeignersin2009,aswehavebeendoingmoreandmore,theycanindeedcomeknockingin2050anddemandtheirmoneyback.Withinterest.
