Themoreambitiousagoal,thegreatertheskepticism.Jour-nalists,customers,andevensomeassociateswerewonder-ing:canthiswork?Today,barelytwoyearslater,therecanbenodoubt:wecandoit.Wecanputclimateactionintoprac-tice–hereandnow.Since2020,theBoschGrouphasbeenclimateneutral.Themorethan400locationsworldwide

nolongerleaveaCO2footprintwiththeiractivities(scopes1and2).Around2,000newlylaunchedprojectsaroundtheworldandavirtualteamofmorethan1,000associateshavehelpedtotranslatethestrategicapproachwithfourlevers

overthepasttwoyearsintoeffectiveclimateaction.SowhatprogresshasBoschmadeas2020comestoaclose?Hereisabriefoverview.

Lever1:Improveenergyefficiency

Since2019,morethan0.38terawatt-hours(TWh)ofenergyhavealreadybeensavedthroughefficiencymeasuresat

some400Boschlocationsworldwide,andthisfigureisto

beraisedto1.7TWhby2030.Toachievethisgoal,Bosch

intendstoinvestatotalofaroundonebillioneurosby2030.Thefocusisprimarilyonelectricityconsumptionandheat

generation.Thisisalsothestartingpointforthemajorityofprojectslaunchedsincethestartofclimateactionactivi-

ties–projectsliketheonecarriedoutbyMiguelMorales

HuertaandtheEnergyManagementTeaminSanLuisPotosí,Mexico:oneofatotalof16BoschlocationsintheLatin

waspossibletocaptureannualenergysavingsofaround

1.1gigawatt-hours(GWh).Havingestablishedthatthe

projectteam’sideaisbestpractice,Boschcannowrollitoutthroughoutthecompany.

Americancountry.TheMobilitySolutionssitemanufacturespowertraincomponents.In2019,itbegantosetupasystem-aticenergymanagementsystem–fromdigitallycollecting

consumptiondatatotargetedenergy-savingmeasuresandcontinuousknowledgesharing.Concretemeasureswere

energyfromrenewablesourcesitself–primarilyfrompho-tovoltaics(PV).Around69GWharegeneratedalreadytoday.Againstthisbackdrop,anambitiousplaniscurrentlybecom-ingrealityinThuringia:theBoschplantinEisenachintendstominimizeitselectricityconsumptionby2022througha

sophisticatedenergymanagementsystem.Theremaining

amountofenergyneededisthentobecoveredbythecom-pany’sownelectricitysupplyfromphotovoltaicsystemsandtheexclusivepurchaseofelectricityfromwindpower.The

PVsystemonthecarportatthesite–with13,000installedsolarmodules–isoneofthelargestPVcarportsinGermanyandalreadycontributes1.6megawattpeak.Boschalso

reliesonphotovoltaicsatmanyotherlocations.InAustralia,

forexample,asystemwentintooperationattheClaytonplantinMay2020thatwillgeneratearound1,350MWhofenergyeachyear.

ditioningandventilationsystemtoenabledemand-based

control.Atthesametime,wehaveoptimizedtheshutdownmanagementoftheplantsandeliminatedcompressedair

leaks,”saysenergymanagerHuerta.“Allthiswasflanked

bytheinternalcampaign#BeEcoBeBoschthatsoughtto

involveasmanyassociatesaspossibleinthemeasures.”Theoutcome:by2019,energyconsumptionwasalreadyaround4,300megawatt-hours(MWh)lessthanoriginallyplanned.

Samegoal,differentapproach,some12,600kilometers

away:inSuzhou,China,AlexLiandhiseight-strongprojectteamarecommittedtothegoalofreducingtheenergycon-sumptionofSurfaceMountedTechnology(SMT)solderingmachinestozerooutsideproductiontimes.Afterthefirststep,whichprovedthefeasibilityoftheapproach,adigitalsolutionwasdevelopedin2020toautomaticallyshutdownthe35furnaces,whichreachan

boschgenerates69gWhofrenew-ableenergyatitslocations.

2020,forexample,long-termcontractswereconcluded

withthreeenergysuppliersinGermany.RWE,Statkraft,andVattenfalleachsupplyBoschexclusivelywithelectricityfromsubsidy-freesolarfarms.Intotal,morethan100,000mega-watt-hoursofelectricitywillflowthroughthepublicgridtoBoschlocationsinGermanyeveryyear–equivalenttothe

annualelectricityconsumptionofupto30,000households.Underoptimumphotovoltaicconditions,thepeakoutput

Inordertoreachcarbonneutralityasquicklyaspossible,

Boschhasprimarilyincreasedtheproportionofgreenpowerused.InGermany,thecompanyhasbeenpurchasingexclu-sivelygreenelectricitywithcorrespondingguaranteesof

originsince2019.Group-wide,theproportionofgreenelec-tricitywasaround83percentasoftheendof2020.WilhelmRelard,whoisresponsibleforthecoordinationofenergy

procurement,explains:“Throughourregionalorganization,weaimtocoverallelectricityconsumption,ifpossible,fromappropriatesources.”

Goalachieved–what’snext?

Carbonneutralityhasbeenachieved,andBoschisalready

workingonthenextsteps.TorstenKallweit,headofEHS

(Environment,Health,Safety)andSustainabilityatBosch

andthusalsoresponsibleforachievingthegroup’sclimatetargets:“Carbonneutralitywasourfirstmajormilestone.

Wewerethefirstlargeindustrialenterpriseintheworldto

demonstratehowquicklyacarbonfootprintcanbereducedtozero.Thetasknowistofurtheroptimizethemixofthe

fourlevers–inotherwords,torefinethemeasuresused.

Onlythencanwereduceourclimateimpactinthelong

term–andthat’swhatreallymatters.”Anothergoalisalso

alreadyinfocus:by2030,15percentofindirectemissions

aretobesaved,whichcorrespondstomorethan60millionmetrictonsofCO2.TheseareemissionsthatoccuroutsideBosch’sdirectsphereofinfluence–forexample,atsuppli-

ers,inlogistics,onbusinesstrips,orduringproductuse.Theexpertsrefertothisasscope3.Kallweit:“Havingachieved

ourinitialtargetsforscopes1and2,wearenowtackling

scope3emissionswiththesamedegreeofrigor–setting

specifictargetsandmilestonesforthecomingyears.We

havethereforesetourselvesclimateactiontargetsalong

theentirevaluechain.Since2020,wealreadyusecarbon

offsetstomakeourbusinessflightscarbonneutral.”The

climateactiontargetshavebeenexternallyconfirmedbytheScienceBasedTargetsinitiative(SBTi),whichprovidesan

independentassessmentofcompanies’targetsforreducingemissionsbasedonscientificevidence.Boschisthefirst

automotivesuppliertojointheinitiativewithaconcretegoal.

Scope3–theviewoutside

A15percentdecreaseinindirectemissionsby2030:

comparedwithmakingtheentiregroupcarbonneutral,thismighthardlyappearambitious–butonlyatfirstglance.“Thescope3targetisarguablythemostambitiousofourtargets,”Kallweitemphasizes,“becausewearelargelydependent

hereonfactorsbeyondourdirectsphereofinfluence.For

example,wedependonthecooperationofourpartnersandsuppliers.Wewon’treachthe15percentcutwithouttheircommitment.Thisiswhyourpurchasingfunctionisalsoset-tingitselfcleargoalsandsupportingourbusinesspartnersintheirdevelopmenttowardsustainability.”

Inlogistics,thefocusisonoptimizingprocurement,poolingshipments,andlastbutnotleastavoidingairtransport.A

largeproportionofthedeliveriesdestinedforBoschare

tobeshippedbyseainthefuture.Atthesametime,the

in-houseclimateactivistsexpectimportantsteeringeffectsfromaninternalcarbontaxonbusinesstrips,andmaking

boardofmanagement.IncollaborationwithBoschClimateSolutions,thecompanyhasanalyzedhowitcanoptimizeitsmanufacturingprocess,whatcanbedoneaboutpackaging,andhowtoswitchtogreenenergy.“WewanttobenefitfromtheexperienceBoschhasgainedworkingatitsownplantssothatwebecomeevenmoreenergyefficientinafirststep,”Mayeradds.

Boschoffersavarietyofsolutionsformobilefuel-cellsystemsthataddresscustomerrequirementsaroundtheworld:forthestackasthecoreofthe

design,theindividual

componentsinthesub-modules,orthecompletesystemforcommercial

vehicles.

Itmightbethelightestchemicalelement,butisaveritableheavyweightwhenitcomestotheenergysupplyofthefuture:hydrogen.Safe,clean,andavailableinunlimitedquantities,hydro-

gencaneasilybeproducedbyelectrolysis.Andifelectricityfromrenewablesourcesisusedintheprocess,theloopcanbeclosedforaclimate-neutralsolution.Asifthatwerenotenough,

hydrogenisalsocomparativelyeasytostoreandtransport–makingitoneofthemostimportantenergysourcesofthefuture.

Manyexpertsarealreadytalkingabouttheclimate-neutral,hydrogen-basedeconomy.Andpolicymakers,too,arerecog-nizingthepotentialofhydrogen.ThisisespeciallytrueoftheEU,whosehydrogenstrategyaimstoestablishahydrogen

economyby2050.Aspecialfocuswassetontransportandroadtraffic.Althoughelectromobilityisgainingmomentumwithbattery-poweredvehicles,itisreachingitslimitsinthecaseoftrucksduetotheweightofthebatteriesused.Thisiswheretheadvantagesofthehydrogenfuelcellcomeintoplay:duetothehighenergydensityofcompressedhydro-gen,agoodsevenkilogramsaresufficientfora40-metric-

tontrucktodrive100kilometers.Oncethetankisempty,

thevehiclecanberefueledbyconventionalmeansinjust

afewminutes.“Thefuelcellisalwaysthefirstchoicefor

applicationsinwhichmanykilometershavetobedriven

everydayandlargerloadshavetobemoved,”saysDr.UweGackstatter,chairmanoftheBoschPowertrainSolutions

division.Thesearegreatopportunities,andBoschismaking

acorrespondinglywide-rangingcommitment–fromthe

serialdevelopmentofthestackstotheefficiencyoptimiza-tionofthepowertrainsystem.Forinstance,intheEU-fundedH2Haulproject,Boschiscurrentlyworkingwithothercom-paniestoputafleetof16fuel-celltrucksontheroadand

testtheminthefieldatfourlocationsinEurope–includingthecorrespondingrefuelinginfrastructuretoenablerapidrefueling.Theresultsoftheprojectshouldbeavailableby2024.Andwhatworksfortruckscouldalsopowercars,

trains,ships,andevenaircraftinthefuture.

However,itisalsoclearthatitisnotpossibletoreachthe

climatetargetswithalternativepowertrainsalone.Afterall,roughlyhalfthevehiclesthatwillbeontheroadin2030

havealreadybeensold,andmostofthemhaveagasolineordieselengine.LegacyvehicleswillalsohavetoplaytheirpartincuttingCO?emissions.Onepathtoachievingthisiswithsyntheticfuelsthatareproducedexclusivelywithrenewable

Althoughtheresearchcommunitystillhasworktodo,

thepathtoahydrogen-based,andthusclimate-neutral,

economyisclearlyoutlined.Thetechnologyfortheproduc-tionofhydrogenisprovenandcontrollable;ifthereissuf-

energy.Inthebest-casescenario,manufacturerscapturetheCO?neededtoproducethefuelfromthesurroundingair,

turningagreenhousegasintoaresource:theCO2releasedinthecombustionofeFuelsisessentiallyrecycledandusedtoproducenewsyntheticfuel.ItisalreadypossibletouseeFuelswithtoday’sinternalcombustionenginesandtoaddthemtoconventionalfuelswithoutanyneedforretrofitting,asthechemicalstructuresandbasicpropertiesofgasolineordieselremainintact.Fromtheperspectiveofclimate

action,thisopensupanotherpromisingpathtozero-emis-sionsmobility,anditisyetanotherfieldinwhichBoschisapioneer.
