紅字英語讀書報告2011-2012-2英語閱讀(4)期中作業(yè)姓名姜麗萍班級英語1103學號1101901315得分_______TheSpiritofTheScarletLettersTheScarletLetter,writtenbyHawthorn,whowasanAmericannovelistandshortstorywriter,showusastoryaboutsoul.Asyouknown,everyonehassoul,butsomeonemaintainthesoul,somepeopledamagethesoul,andotherslosethesoul,sotheworldisfilledwithallkindsoflifeandthestoryofhuman.Theprotagonist,HesterPrynne,worethescarletlettersonherchestsymbolizingtheharshnessofPuritansociety,justbecauseshefellinlovewiththepriest,ArthurDimmesdaleandthenhadachild.Forprotectingthepriest'sreputation,sheacceptedthepunishmentwithnohesitation----aredAletteronherchestmeaningAdultery.AlthoughitisabsolutelydifficultforhertolivenormallyandhappilywitharedA,sheisagreatwomanwhohadneversurrenderedtothefate,whoevenshowedthecontemptforthefateallherlife,whohadaspiritofsacrificeforpurelove.Shedeeplyknewifyouwanttogainfreedomandliberation,youhavenochoicebuttofightingwiththepedanticPuritanandthedarksociety.Withahotlypublicopinion,HesterPrynneisnodoubtguiltyofadulteryandaccusedbyreligion,butshechoosedtofacethedarkdayswithapositiveattitude.Facedwiththemistakeshehaddone,shejustfeltnoregretbutconsciousness.Sheisthewomanwhohadalwaysbeenresistingthemiserablefate,whowasalwayslookingforwardtoabetterlife,whoseheartwasfullofunselfishlove.Herconsciousnessandadamancy,doughtinessandunconventionshowedasupercharacterofthenewcolonialwomen.Withthemindofstrongresistanceandfightingwill,shehadobviouslyalreadyshowedtheviewofobjectingtothePuritanandthecommoncustoms.Soshebecamenoblemanreceivingtherespectfromotherpeople,atthesametime,shesucceededineliminatingtheshameformtheredAwhichshouldbecomethesymbolofnobleintheend.ThatisthereasonwhytheHesterPrynneimpressedmealot.Inmyopinion,thescarletlettersnotonlyrepresenttheshameorthesymbolofnoble,but,infact,aspiritualhintandpressure.Everyone,moreorless,islikelytohavethescarletlettersinhisorherownheart.Whenwedosomethingwrong,thereisalwaysajusticeremindingusthatthethingswhatwehavedonewaswrong.Andthenyouwillhavethecontinuouslytormentofconscience,sosomecriminalswillsurrender,andevenfeelashamedorwhatwehavedone.Itisthescarletletterinourheartwhichishavinganeffectonus,isn'tit?Everybodyhashisscarletletter,butsomearethevoiceofthejustice,somearethecrimeoftheaccused.TheScarletletterisyourselfanddefeatingthescarletletterisfacingyourself.TheScarletLetterletmetofeelthepeaceafterthedepression,thehappinessafterthepain.第二篇:《紅字》讀書報告6600字ABookReportofTheScarletLetterByLanJianlong,2010TheScarletLetteriswrittenbyNathanielHawthorne,anAmericannovelist,andwaspublishedbyShanghaiTranslationPressin1989.ThestoryissetinBostoninthe17thcentury.Atthattime,theCityFathersmovedtoNewEngland,andbuiltthehouses,thechurchesaswellastheprisonswiththeirownhands.TheybroughtthecustomsandreligionofoldEnglandwiththem,andstrongbiastowardswomen.Thegistofthestoryisasfollows:HesterPrynneisthefemaleprotagonistinthisnovel.Sheisayoung,beautifulandgentlewoman–aperfectwomaninpeople’seye.However,shemarriedRogerChilingworth,anoldmisshapenman,whoisalsoadoctor.Shefeelsnohappinessatall.Severalyearslater,herhusbandwaslostonthesea,sowithnobodyaccompanyingher,shehadtolivealonelylife.Justliketheflamingfireinthenight,ayoung,energeticpriestnamedArthurDimmesdale,cameintoherlife.Theyfellinlovewitheachother,andtheyspentaperiodtimeoflifefullofpassionandtruelove.SoonHesterfoundthatshebecamepregnant.Owingtothis,shewasarrestedandgavebirthtoalittlegirlintheprison.Atthattime,onlywouldshetellthepublicthenameoftheadulterer,couldshegotridoftheimputation.Asweknow,apriestwouldbeblamedandpunishedbadlyifhedoessomethingthatisforbiddenbyGod.Inordertoprotecthishighpositionandgoodreputation,sheacceptedtheshame,worethescarletletter,whichreferredtoshame,andstoodaloneunderthescaffoldinthepublic.ThepersonwhoquestionedHesterhappenedtobeMr.Dimmesdale.Dimmesdalehimselfhadapureheart--hemaycouldn’thelpcryingoutthathewastheadulterer,butatlasthedidn’tbringhimselftoadmithisguilt.Tohim,theletterwasacombinationofguilty,miseryandevilness.Fromthatdayon,hehadprintedtheletterAinhismind.Hester’sformerhusbandChilingworthcamebacksomedayandhedecidedtotakerevengeonthepriest.Hepretendedtobethepriest’sdoctorandfriend,buthisrealintentionwastognawhisheartwithendlessguilty.Hisrevengelastedforsevenyears.Andfinally,Mr.Dimmesdalecouldn’tbearthemiseryhiddendeepinhisheart,andhetoldthetownspeople,whoalwaysthoughthighlyofhim,thathewastheveryman.Standingunderthescaffold,hebecamestrongenoughtodothethingthathefailedtodosevenyearsago.Hepulledopenhisshirtforthemtoseethescarletletteronhischest.Noonehadeverputtheletteronhischest,buttheysawthered-hot“A”blazingup.Hefelthislifewaslies,emptinessanddeath.Luckily,hegotaclearconscienceintheend.Afterreadingthisnovel,Ibegintounderstandthewesterncultureandthereligioninthe17thcentury.HereIcanonlygiveyoumyownviewinsteadofthecommonview.Ijustanalysisthecharactersinthisstoryasfollows,becauseofthelimitationofthenumberofwords.TheScarletLetteroffersanextraordinaryinsightintothenormsandbehaviorofthe17thcenturyinAmericanPuritansociety.Thebasicconflictsandproblemsofitsmaincharacters,however,arefamiliartoreadersinthepresent.Thefemaleprotagonist,hasborneachildoutofwedlockandhasbeenjailedforoverthreemonthsandsentencedtowearasymbolofheradultery,ascarlet“A”onherdressatalltimes.Itconcernsaboutthemoral,emotionalandpsychologicaleffectofthesinonpeopleingeneral.It’snotsimplyalovestoryorastoryofsin.TheScarletLetterbyNathanielHawthorneusesthescarletletterstosymbolizetheharshnessofPuritansociety,showinghowtheybrandsinnersforlife.ThestoryhappenedinBostonabout200yearsago.Itnarratesloveaffairsbetweenthreepersons.HesterPrynne,ArthurDimmesdaleandHester’shusband,WhocalledhimselfRogerChillingworth.Heisanolddoctor.Hesterdoesnotlovehimatall.Anothermanisayoungminister,Dimmesdale,whohasahighpositionamongministersandishighlyrespectedamonghispeopleintown.HesterandDimmesdaleloveeachother.Buttheirloveisforbiddeninthattime.Itissinful.Duetothis,HesterispunishedbysocietywithaletterAonherchest,whichconsideredanevil,ashame.Inthisnovel,themainlineseemstobearoundtheletterA.Hesterisbraveenoughtofacethecruelreality.Sheisalwayswithamindofcourage.Shehasbeenalonewithherchildforsolong,withlittlecommunication.Shame!Hopelessness!Loneliness!HesterhastoweartheletterAdayafterday,sevenyearsasforpunishmentandillfame.Whenawomanhaslivedthroughadifficultexperience,hercharacterchangesagreatdeal.Ifshebealltenderness,shewilldie.Ifshesurvives,thetendernesswillleaveher.Hester’scharitabledeedsandquiethumilityhaveearnedherareprievefromthescornofthecommunity.Theletteronherchestrepresentsherworkonearth,alwayshelpingothers,withoutexpectinganythanks.Neverafterwards,doesthatscarletletterleaveherchest.Thetownspeoplenolongerviewtheletterasapunishment,butratherasrepresentinghergreatstrengthandbraveryandthysayitmeans“Able”.ButArthurDimmesdale,hissinagainstHesterandPearlisthathewillnotacknowledgethemashiswifeanddaughterinthedaylight.Hekeepshisdreadfulsecretfromallthoseunderhiscareinthechurchforsevenyearsforfearthathewilllosetheirloveandwillnotbeforgiven.Heistooweaktoadmithissins.Hesuffersfrommysterioushearttrouble,seeminglycausedbypsychologicaldistress.What’sworse,heisanadvisortothet
