itsendssignalstothespinalcordthatresultinmusclemovement.Whenthespinalcordreceivesthe

brainsignals,itstimulatesacollectionofnervecellsthatcanactivatedifferentmuscles.

Theresearchersreportedthatallthreepatientswhogotthespinalcordimplantswereabletotake

theirfirststepswithinanhourafterreceivingthem.Overthenextsixmonths,thepatientsregained

theabilitytotakepartinmoreadvancedwalkingactivities,thestudyfound.Theywerealsoableto

ridebicyclesandswimincommunitysettings.

Unlikeotherattemptstohelpparalyzedpatientswalkbystimulatingnervesthroughthebackof

thespine,Courtinesaidthathisteamredesignedthedevicessosignalswouldenterthespinefromthe

sides.Thismethodpermitsmoredirecttargetingandactivationofspinalcordareas,hesaid.

Theteamthendevelopedartificialintelligence(AI)systemslinkedtothedevice.TheAIcontrols

electrodesonthedevicetosendsignalstostimulateindividualnervesthatcontrolmusclesneededfor

walkingandotheractivities.However,becausethepatientsmuscleswereweakfromnotbeingused,
