AdiscussionandanalysisofEnglishspelling

WritinginEnglishconsistsofmakingmarksonpaper,calledletters.Itistheselettersthatrepresent

thesoundsofourspeechwritteninthesameorderastheyarespoken.Conventionallythese

aresequencedfromlefttorightacrossthepagewithsuccessivelinesprogressingfromthetopto

thebottomofthepage.TheEnglishlanguage,dependingonaccent,contains42to45sounds

knownasphonemes(thesmallestdistinguishableunitsofspeechthatwecanhear).Allofthe

commoncoresoundsareshowninthetablebelowtogetherwiththewayinwhichweshall

representtheminthisbook.
