festivalofQoyllurRiti,whichtakesplaceat4,300metershighinthesouthernAndesofPeru.
AsIlookedbackdownthetrailwehadclimbed,anduptowardswherewehadtogo,thecolorfulsightstruck
mealot.EntirefamilieswearinglocalcostumesweretravellingtothisuniquefestivalfromalloverPeru.Among
themwereoldmen,motherswithsmallbabiesandchildrenallfollowingthesameroute.Manyofthemhadhorses
anddonkeyscarrytheirfood,blankets,cookingpotsandtents.Othershadmadetheirwayonfootthroughthe
mountainsfordaystoattendthisremarkableevent.
WecontinuedclimbingupwardforanotherhourandahalfbeforereachingtheSinakaraValley.Rightacrossthis
flatpieceofgroundpeoplewereputtingupsheltersandtentstoprotectthemselvesfromthefreezingmistandrain.
Itwasclear,however,fromthesoundofthedrumsandsingingrisingfromthecampsitethattheweatherwasnot
goingtoweakenthefestivalspirit.Theairofexcitement,evenfromourplacemorethanamileaway,waspalpable.
Afterdinner,wewenttobedfullyclothedinsideoursleepingbags.Wewereupearlythenextmorning,the
maindayofthefestival,despitehavingsleptbadlyonthefrozenground.Theukukus,menwearingblackmasks
andcostumes,hadleftthecampsiteintheearlyhourstoclimbthenearestmountainbythelightofthefullmoon.
Fromtimetotimeduringtheprocession,theystoppedtodanceontheglaciers,believingthiswouldbringluck
totheirvillagesfortheyeartocome.Inthedawnlight,wewatchedthemwindingtheirwaybackdownlikealarge
blacksnake.Astheydescended,theywerejoinedbygroupsofdancersinbrighttraditionalcostumes.They
performedwherevertherewasspace.Althoughtheredidnotseemtobeanyoneorganizingthemoranytimetable,
thewholefestivalhadbecomeahugeharmoniouscelebration.

Inthelaboratory,Nicholsonandhisteamexposedeachstraintopressuresrangingfrom0.01to100times
Earth’satmosphericpressureatsealevel―correspondingtothepressuresonthesurfaceofMarsandinsidethe
liquidwateroceanofJupiter’smoonEuropa,respectively.Theresearchersfoundthat11strainsgrewmeasurablyat
everypressuretested.Veryfewpaststudiesfocusedonhowwellmicrobestoleratearangeofpressures,Nicholson
says,buttheseresultsarenonethelesssurprisinggiventhatmostotherorganismsseemtobefarmore
pressure-sensitive.“HumanshavetroublebreathingonMountEverest,”henotes,“andthat’sabout30percentof
sea-levelatmosphericpressure.“
Otherbacteriahavebeenshowntodowellatcomparablyhighpressures,saysFelipeGómezGómez,an
astrobiologistattheNationalInstituteofAerospaceTechnologyinMadrid,whowasnotinvolvedinthestudy.But
