But when the yearly games for the disabled were started at Stoke Mandeville, England in 1948 by Sir Ludwig Guttmann, the situation began to change. Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who had been driven to England in 1939 from Nazi Germany, had been asked by the British government to set up an injuries center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital near London. His ideas about treating injuries included sport for the disabled. In the first games just two teams of injured soldiers took part. The next year, 1949, five teams took part. From those beginnings, things have developed fast. Teams now come from abroad to Stoke Mandeville every year. In 1960 the first Olympics for the Disabled were held in Rome, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games. Now, every four years the Olympic Games for the Disabled are held, if possible, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games, although they are organized separately. In other years Games for the Disabled are still held at Stoke Mandeville. In the1984 wheelchair Olympic Games, 1064 wheelchair athletes from about 40 countries took part. Unfortunately, they were held at Stoke Mandeville and not in Los Angeles, along with the other Olympics. The Games have been a great success in helping the progress of international friendship and understanding, and in proving that being disabled does not mean you cant enjoy sport. One small source (來源) of disappointment for those who organize and take part in the games, however, has been the unwillingness of the International Olympic Committee (委員會(huì)) to include disabled events at the Olympic Games for the able-bodied. Perhaps a few more years are still needed to persuade those fortunate enough not to be disabled to understand that their disabled fellow athletes should be included.56. The first games for the disabled were held _ after Sir Ludwig Guttmann arrived in England.A. 40 yearsB. 21 yearsC. 10 yearsD. 9 years57. Besides Stoke Mandeville, surely the games for the disabled were once held in _.A. New YorkB. LondonC. RomeD. Los Angeles58. This text tells us that Sir Ludwig Guttmann _.A. is an early organizer of the games for the able-bodiedB. is welcomed by the British governmentC. is an injured soldierD. is from England59. From the text, we may know that the writer is _.A. one of the organizers of the games for the disabledB. a disabled person who once took part in the gamesC. against holding the games for the disabledD. in support of holding the games for the disabledB Gary Finkle was seriously hurt in a swimming-pool accident seven years ago. A heavy-set, bearded man of 27, he is one of thousands of Americans who have lost actually all feeling and movement from their shoulders down. He lives with his wife, Micky, and a female monkey named Jo outside the village of Andes, New York. Gary takes part in an unusual organization called Helping Hands: Simian Aides (猴子助手) for the disabled. The organization supplies the disabled with trained monkeys that reduce the disabled persons dependence on family, friends and hired servants. Using his mouth, Gary controls a small laser (激光)pointer fixed on his wheel-chair. With it, he directs Jo to change books or the tape-recorder. She brings him drinks from a refrigerator (冰箱) and clears away empty containers. When asked, Jo will fetch the remote control (遙控器) for the TV and place it on Garys working table where he can operate it with his mouthstick. This mouthstick can be used for practically everything: turning the pages of a book, dialing the telephone, changing channels on TV, working at a typewriter or computer. If Garys mouthstick drops to the floor, Jo will pick it up and gently put it again into his mouth.“I cant imagine living without her,” Gary says. He will always need human assistance for such things as getting in and out of bed, bathing or changing his clothes. But having Jo reduces his dependence on Micky, making it possible for her to do things in town without worrying about her husbands safety.60. Before Jo came to the family, Gary_.A. depended completely on his servantB. depended mainly on an assisting machine C. depended on the pity of other peopleD. depended completely on his wife62. Garys life and experienceD. trained monkeys that can help the disabledC For a small town, Manhattan, Kansas has some big surprise. And one of them is the Holiday Inn Hotel, with rooms built around a swimming pool and a friendly family atmosphere. The Holiday Inn is where Manhattan people often go for a special party, or a night out. A lot of them choose to eat in the brightly lit restaurant near the pool. And many of them will be served by Ellen Logan, who has worked as a waitress here for more than two years.Ellen, like most of the waitresses, is also a student. She comes from Nebraska, but shes planning one day to be a veterinary surgeon, and to care for small animals. But in order to support herself at college, she works twenty hours a week at the Holiday Inn.Ellen soon learned what every waitress finds out. Your best friend is a good pair of shoes. She paid fifty-five dollars for hers, much more than she would usually spend. Shes discovered something else too. You dont have to know much about food to be a good waitress, but you do have to know a lot about people.“A lot of business people always stay here when they come to Manhattan”, she explains. “They like you to recognize them and remember their favorite dishes. But some couples come for a night out together. They just want to be left alone. Then there are people who cant make up their minds. They look down the menu and say What do you suggest? So I ask them how hungry they are. If they say Not very, I suggest the salad bar, with soup, salad, bread and a fruit Kansas Strip Steak, with potatoes or rice. You get salad and bread as well, Its very nice. Really good value.”Ellen may get tired feet sometimes, but at least shes learning too much about people.
