Knowledge Target:Enable the students to know something about the ways of becoming addicted to cigarettes and the harmful effects of smoking.2Ability Target: Enable the students to master some reading skills to get information from a passage.3. Moral Target: Help the students to build up the correct attitude towards smoking.Teaching important points:1. Motivate students interest in learning something about smoking.2. Improve students reading skills, such as fast reading and careful reading.Teaching difficult points:Help students to build up the correct attitude towards smoking.Teaching methods:Task-based method and communication teaching methodTeaching aids A computer, a projector and a tape recorderTeaching procedures:Step 1 Lead in 1. Show four pictures which are often seen in their daily activities ( running,swimming,surfing the Internet for a whole night and smoking) to lead in what the healthy life is.Step 2 Pre-readingAsk students two questions to lead in the text.Q1: 1.Have you ever smoked?Q2: Do you think smoking should be banned? Step 3 Fast reading Task1:Let students read the text quickly, then answer two questions.Q1: Who was this letter written for?Q2: Who wrote the letter?Task2: Let students read the text quickly again, then match the topic sentence of each paragraph. Step 4 Careful readingTask3: Let students read paragraph 1-2 aloud, and then get the students to do the multiple-choice exercises. 1. The first paragraph of the letter shows James granddad .A. lives a healthy lifeB. has nothing to do at homeC. is tired when returning from a long bike trip2. How long did James granddad cycle in an afternoon? A. 82 kilometres B.10 kilometres C. 20 kilometres.3. Why did James granddad write the letter to James?A. He wanted to tell James he was happy.B. Require the students to give their reasons. 1. Tom said that he felt happier when he smoked. That means he is physically addicted.2. A heavy smoker may pick up a cigarette to smoke even without realizing what he is doing.3. If a young lady often smokes, she may give birth to a bigger baby in the future.4. People who smoke are more likely to suffer from heart disease.5. After smoking for a few years, a man may find that he can run as fast as before.Task5: The second part of the text is about some advice of giving up smoking.
