meditation(冥想) and oxygen sport together reduce depression. The Rutgers University study found that this mind and body combination, done twice a week for only two months, reduced the symptoms for a group of students by 40 percent.“We are excited by the findings because we have seen such a meaningful improvement in both clinically depressed and nondepressed students,” said lead author Dr Brandon Alderman.“It is the first time that both of these two behavioral ways have been looked at together for dealing with depression.”Researchers believe the two activities have an interactive effect in combating depression.Alderman and Dr Tracey Shors discovered that a combination of mental and physical training(MAP) enabled students with major depressive disorder not to let problems or negative thoughts defeat them.Rutgers researchers say those who participated in the study began with 30 minutes of focused attention meditation followed by 30 minutes of oxygen sport. They were told that if their thoughts drifted to the past or the future, they should refocus on their breathing, enabling those with depression to accept momenttomoment changes in attention.Shors, who studies the production of new brain cells in the hippocampuspart of the brain involved in memory and learningsays scientists have shown in animal models that oxygen sport exercise keeps a large number of certain cells alive. The idea for the human intervention(干預) came from her laboratory studies, she says, with the main goal of helping individuals acquire new skills so that they can learn to recover from stressful life events.By learning to focus their attention and exercise, people who are fighting depression can acquire new learning skills that can help them process information and reduce the overwhelming recollection of memories from the past,Shors says.“We know these treatments can be practiced over a lifetime and that they will be effective in improving mental health,” said Alderman.“The good news is that this intervention can be practiced by anyone at any time and at no cost.”【語篇解讀】本文主要介紹了一項研究成果將冥想和有氧運動結合起來治療抑郁有很明顯的效果。1What made the research so different?AAdopting a way of meaningful during a recent conference.Scientists in Australia have shown that a chemical called nitric oxide could increase the chances of surviving a poisonous snakebite. The scientists injected rats with a deadly amount of snake venom. Then they rubbed an ointment (軟膏) containing nitric oxide on the skin around the injection site. The study found that the rats lived about onethird longer than if nitric oxide had not been used. But the treatment had to be started very quickly.Dirk van Helden led the research. He says the nitric oxide ointment also showed promise in humans. The study appeared earlier this year in the journal Nature Medicine.Scientists say the findings could help save many lives.A recent study found that poisonous snakes cause as many as ninetyfour thousand deaths worldwide each year. But Ulrich Kuch of the Biodiversity and Climate Research Center in Frankfurt,Germany, says that number appears to be low.Mr Kuch says many deaths could be prohibited if snakebite victims are treated correctly, but they often go to traditional healers or do not seek any help at all.He said,“Sometimes its because there is no treatment availableno antivenom (抗蛇毒血清),which is the specific drug to treat snakebitesor health care staff do not know how to treat snakebites, and sometimes its because transportation to get to a health facility is not available or too expensive.”There is no single antivenom that can be used to treat all snakebites. The antivenom must be specific to the kind of snake that bit the person. In some countries the treatment is costly, while in others there is no such treatment.【語篇解讀】全世界每年都有很多人死于被蛇咬,科學家們正在研究治療蛇毒的新方法,并且取得了進步。5What is this passage mainly about?ASnakebite deaths around the world.BProgress in fighting snakebite deaths.CSnakebite treatment around the
