1、Lesson10 The loss of the TitanicIntroduction of the Titanic The Titanic was designed by experienced engineers, using some of the most advanced technologies and extensive safety features of the time. It was also called “unsinkable ship”. The Titanic was a passenger liner, after setting sail with 2,22
2、3 people on board, she struck an iceberg in the north Atlantic Ocean on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, United States, and sank at 2:20 am on the morning of 15 April, 1912, resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people. Call for help The ship carried lifeboats for only 1,178
3、 people. A number of men died due to the women and children first. This meant that many boats were only half filled. Further, only a few were picked up from the water. Wireless operators Jack Phillips and Harold Bride began sending help signal , which was received by several ships, including Mount T
4、emple, Frankfurt, Virginian and Titanics sister ship, Olympic, but none of the vessels were close enough to reach the liner before she sank. In the end it was the Carpathia which came to the rescue and picked up the survivors from the lifeboats in four hours too late to rescue all of Titanics passen
