His team lost the game because of him. 他們隊由于他輸了比賽。 because of 是介詞短語, 意為“因為;由于”, 后面可接名詞、代詞、動名詞或what引導(dǎo)的名詞性從句等。e.g. He walks slowly because of his bad leg. 他因為腿不方便而行走緩慢。拓展表示“因為”的其他

18、短語1) thanksto意為“由于或因為某人(某事)”, 通常用于好的方面, 譯為“多虧”, 但有時作反語;引導(dǎo)的介詞短語可置于句首或句末。e.g. Thankstothebadweather, thematch hadbeencancelled. 多虧這倒霉天氣, 比賽取消了。(反語)2) dueto意為“由于; 因.造成”, 在句中既可作狀語(此時一般不用于句首),也可作表語或定語;作表語或狀語時可將due to看作是owingto的同義短語。e.g. Accidentsduetodrivingathighspeed wereverycommonthatweekend. 在那個周末因高速

19、駕駛造成的交通事故很多。 dueto除可表示原因外, 還有“應(yīng)給于, 應(yīng)屬于”的意思。 e.g. Ourgratefulthanksareduetoyou. 向你表示我們衷心的感謝。3) owingto意為“由于”, 引出的介詞短語在 句中作狀語或表語, 做狀語時, 習(xí)慣上用逗 號和句子其他部分分開。e.g. Theydecidedtoput offthetrip, owingto the badweather. 由于天氣不好他們決定推遲旅行。Owingtohiscarelessdriving, wehadabad accident. 由于他駕駛疏忽, 我們發(fā)生了一次大車禍。4. But whatever it was, dont be too hard on yourself. 但不管結(jié)果怎樣, 不要對自己要求太苛刻。 be har

21、d on sb.意為“對很嚴厲;要求很苛刻;苛待(為難)某人”。e.g. Dont be too hard on him. 別對他太苛刻了。 I think he didnt mean to be hard on you. 我想他并不是有意使你為難。6. Besides, winning or losing is only half the game. 除此之外, 輸贏只是比賽的一半。 besides 作副詞, 意為“而且;還有, 再者”, 用來追加原因及理由。e.g. I dont mind picking up your things from the store. Besides, th

22、e walk will do me good. 我并不在意幫你去商店拿貨。再者, 走走 路對我身體也好。除besides外, also, moreover, in addition等也可表示“而且”。7. The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with courage rather than fear in his heart. 第二天, 彼得心里并沒有害怕, 而是勇敢地去參加足球訓(xùn)練。 rather than 是一個并列連詞, 此處意為“并非;而不是”。e.g. Sheenjoyssingingratherthandancing. 她喜歡唱歌

23、, 而不喜歡跳舞。rather than 用法小結(jié)1) ratherthan與would連用時, 構(gòu)成“wouldrather.than.”句式, 意思是“寧愿而不愿”, 表示主觀愿望, 即在兩者之中選擇其一。e.g. Shedratherdiethanlosethechildren. 她寧愿死也不愿失去孩子們。2)ratherthan不與would連用時, 表示客觀事實, 意為“(是) 而不是;與其不如”。它連接的并列成分可以是名詞、代詞、形容詞、介詞(短語)、動名詞、分句、不定式、動詞等。e.g. Heisanexplorerratherthanasailor. 與其說他是一個海員, 不如

24、說他是一個探險者。e.g. Heranratherthanwalked. 他是跑來的, 而不是走來的。注意:這里ratherthan后用了walked, 而沒 有用walk, 表示客觀事實, 而不是主 觀愿望。如果換成walk, 則作“寧 愿而不愿”解。e.g. Idecidedtowriteratherthan(to)telephone. 我決定寫信而不是打電話。注意:ratherthan后接不定式時, 不定式可 以帶to, 也可以不帶to, 如上句。 ratherthan位于句首時, 則只能接不帶 to的不定式。e.g. Ratherthanallowthevegetablestogo bad, hesoldthemathalfprice. 與其讓蔬菜爛掉, 他以半價將它們賣掉了。8.
