Thegoodnews,however,isthathowpackagingwasteismanagedisinforaBIGshakeupinlinewiththe"polluterpaysprinciple".Byplacingthemainpointofdutytopayonbrandowners,theywillbeencouragedtochoosemoresustainablepackagingoptionswhicharerecyclableandreusableasmuchaspossible.Otherwise,theywillhavetopayhigherfees.
ThisisasystemknownasExtendedProducerResponsibility(EPR)-meaningthatthosewhohavecontroloverpackagingdesigndecisionswillbeencouragedtodotherightthingfortheplanetatthebeginningandconsiderwhathappensattheendofthepackaging'slifefromthestart.
Whatthismeansisthatinsteadoflocalauthoritiespickingupthebillforhouseholdwastemanagement,companieswillhaveinsteadtopayformanagingyourhouseholdpackagingwasteaswellasthatfrombusinesses,andtheywillbemetwiththeassociatedlittercoststoo.
