Alongsidetheproblemsofpublicgroundwatersourcesistheincreasedconsumptionofprivatelybottledwater,mostofwhichisnamedspringwater,i.e.groundwater.ConsumptionofbottledwaterintheUnitedStates,forinstance,hasrisenfromvirtuallynil(零)inthe1950st0843milliongallonsinl984and2.95billiongallonsinl997.Butdrinkingbottledwaterisnotjustatrendforthemiddleclasses.Indevelopingcountries,waterpipesrarelyextendtothepoorerneighbourhoods,andresidentshavenochoicebuttopayhighpricesforbottledwater.
