Duetopoliticaldifferencesconcerningtheroleofthegovernmentwithothercabinetmembers,JeffersonresignedasSecretaryofStat(yī)ein1793.Jeffersonsoonranforpresident,butwasdefeat(yī)edin1796byJohnAdams.Nevertheless,hewasappointedvicepresident.AlthoughJeffersonandAaronBurrreceivedequalelectoralvotesforpresidency,JeffersonwaselectedpresidentbytheHouseofRepresentativesin1800.DuringJefferson'sterm,boththeLouisianaPurchaseandtheLewisandClarkExpeditionoccurred.Jeffersonservedtwopresidentialterms.HelaterestablishedtheUniversityofVirginia.HediedonJuly4,1826,the50thanniversaryofTheDeclarationofIndependence.Coincidentally,JohnAdamsdiedonthesameday.
