BackgroundinformationPart2warm-upPart3TextOrganizationPart4globalreadingPart5LanguageStudyThediscountking:SamMooreWaltonSamnotonlymakesyoudreambigbutinspiresyoutofollowyourdreamsHowmuchdoyouknowaboutWal-Mart?沃爾瑪(Wal-Mart)是由美國零售業(yè)的傳奇色彩人物山姆沃爾頓創(chuàng)建的。1951年,農(nóng)民出身的山姆沃爾頓在美國中西部本頓威爾小鎮(zhèn)盤下第一家雜貨店,至1960年已在本頓威爾小鎮(zhèn)周圍地區(qū)開設(shè)了15家商店,年?duì)I業(yè)總額達(dá)到140萬美元。當(dāng)時(shí)正值折扣店連鎖經(jīng)營理念在美國零售業(yè)萌芽發(fā)展,山姆沃爾頓經(jīng)過兩年時(shí)間的考察調(diào)研,毅然從雜貨店轉(zhuǎn)向百貨業(yè),于1962年在阿肯色州羅杰斯城開辦了第一家名為“Wal-Mart”(沃爾瑪)百貨商店,并打出了“售價(jià)最低”“保證滿意”的企業(yè)經(jīng)營理念和對(duì)顧客的承諾。
從此以后,沃爾瑪不斷開店擴(kuò)張,1990年成為美國第一大零售商。1991年沃爾瑪在墨西哥城開業(yè),開始進(jìn)入海外市場(chǎng)后、先后進(jìn)入波多黎各、加拿大、阿根廷、巴西、中國、德國、韓國和英國市場(chǎng),經(jīng)過短短的10年,2001年的年銷售總額達(dá)2198.1億美元,一躍成為世界最大的零售商和世界最大的企業(yè)。
